It’s a great feeling, taking down a huge scaffold and unveiling months of hard work. This extended Farmhouse has a whole new silhouette, and is really starting to come together.

Since carefully stripping this listed building back to its original carcass, we’ve kept up a great pace all summer. As new internal limes dry, and we button up the external envelope, our focus now moves to internal finishes, where the original oak framing will remain a key focal point throughout.

It’s great to take a moment to appreciate how much work has gone into repairing, enhancing and future proofing this building before much of it gets closed back in.

Over in Arundel, having previously completed the main house, it was a real pleasure to return and extend that same level of attention and detail outside.

Winding paths, layered planting, new flint retaining walls and engaging structures all work together to create something really special.

We’re looking for an experienced Heritage Carpenter to join our team.

This is a full-time role based in West Sussex, working across listed buildings, period homes, bespoke new builds and high-end refurbishments. We’re looking for someone with strong carpentry experience, particularly within heritage or period properties, who takes pride in careful workmanship and understands the level of detail these projects require.

The role will include heritage carpentry and restoration work, working alongside site teams and other trades, helping with day-to-day site coordination, and maintaining the standards our clients expect.

At Whiteways, with the drainage and services in place, the project has now risen from the ground through face brickwork to DPC, with the footings complete and the block and beam floor in.

From here, we prepare to erect the main structure, which will transition from steelwork into a glulam portal frame with SIPs walls and roof, forming what will become the main seating area of the new cafe.

We’ve been hidden behind hoarding up to this point, but now that we’re out of the ground, the full scale of this project will become apparent to the many keen passers by

Fine details are vital, but so is the wider vision for every project. It’s important to zoom in and zoom out, simultaneously.

At our site in Amberley, there’s no doubt that this striking extension is the focal point, but now that we’re water tight, our working area starts to expand. Our attention now spills both into the existing property and out to the surrounding landscape.

Internally, we’ve started breaking out the entire ground floor, and will be introducing new insulation and underfloor heating throughout ahead of fit out.

Externally, we will be reconfiguring this challenging footprint to achieve much more functional space, with new levels, feature steps and stone faced retaining walling. Beneath the aesthetics will be a myriad of new infrastructure, including a completely new rainwater harvesting system.

These additions are going to elevate this already wonderful home into something very special, with all of the provisions to serve this family for decades to come.

Our ethos, values and commitment to deliver the very best we can runs not only to the core of MSBC, but underpins our choice of who we work with in every direction.

We are proud to have built an incredible network of subcontractors, suppliers, and manufacturers. Decades of experience has taught us the importance of shared values, and the problems that might arise when these are misaligned.

Like clients, we as main contractors also have to evaluate and consider all there is to offer in the market. ‘Price’ is hugely important, of course, but there are many risks to consider beyond just a tendered rate. Risk has a cost, and what might feel like a slight premium at first glance, might just be an offset of risk at a very worthwhile fee, like a great investment, or an insurance policy. It is our job to find this balance between risk and cost for our clients.

One of the very many contractors we’re fortunate to employ regularly are Clarke Roofing & Construction, and they tick all the boxes, every time.

Here, they are delivering 400m² of roofing for us (25,000 new tiles!), with four chimneys and a substantial lead gutter formed and dressed where the two sections meet.

Having worked with them successfully for a number of years, they are a team we know well and trust to deliver a package of this size with the care and attention it demands. Like us, they might not be the very cheapest option available, but they provide true value.

We take great pride in the strength of our supply chain and subcontractor relationships, and in working with those who understand the standard of craftsmanship that our projects demand, the pace of an efficient programme, and the importance of honesty, care and integrity.

Historic properties present many unique challenges, and one of the hardest to navigate is budget vs. building conservation, especially whilst governed by a listed status.

Usually, once you begin to open up a property, it starts to make its own unexpected demands. We do our very best to investigate ahead of time, foresee and allow for such, but you can never truly know the extent of this until you’ve committed to the works. What often accentuates this risk, is a competitive tender.

After removing wallpaper linings throughout this property, we carried out a thorough assessment and put together a proposal for remedial lime plaster repairs. Here, the extent required exceeded allowances given to us during tender, and we’ve worked closely with The National Trust to identify priority areas, unavoidable tasks, and make best use of the contingency available with great success.

This type of situation happens all too often in historic buildings, and we pride ourselves in being able to offer our expert guidance, great value and a willingness to work with you to find feasible, pragmatic solutions.
