Mark Payne Landscape Design offers a fully bespoke garden consultancy, from concept and design, through hard and soft landscaping to planting and maintenance. A garden designed for people, plants and wildlife…

At this Boxgrove project, the garden was designed around our clients’ love of wildlife, creating a space where nature could truly thrive.

At the heart of the design is a linear pond, reflecting the clean lines of the home’s modern extension. Beached edges provide habitat for wildlife, while stepping stones invite you to cross the water and explore the garden.

Winding paths weave around the existing trees, connecting different planting areas and seating spaces, creating changing views and places to pause and enjoy the garden.

The planting scheme is full of wildlife-friendly species with a relaxed English garden feel - from the purple pom-pom flowers of Verbena to vibrant Geum ‘Totally Tangerine’ and long-flowering Geranium ‘Rozanne.

Even the stepping stones are planted with creeping thyme, Erigeron and baby’s tears, softening the journey through the garden and adding scent and texture underfoot.

A garden that feels beautiful, alive and ever-changing - designed to become richer with every season.

Mark describes the creative process like water flowing across a flat rock. At first, the water can move in any direction. Over time, it erodes a path and begins to follow the same route. The designer’s job, he believes, is to keep the water flowing in all directions.

A garden of pathways, journeys and connection 🌸 This converted barn in Sidlesham originally had three separate garden areas; a courtyard with a lawn adjacent to the house, a larger lawn area and a pool. Mark’s design goals were to connect these three spaces whilst maintaining their individual character, and to create a sense of journey that leads you through them. A series of circular arbours and gravel pathways guides you through each area with sculptural focal points and a change in planting style to define each one its own identity and character.

From just an idea to the completed dream outdoor space for our clients 💚 This wildlife-friendly garden in Boxgrove centres round a modern linear pond that connects with the modern architecture of the house’s extension. Step stones on either side of the pond take you through to meandering paths of ancient Horsham stone that wind round beds full of trees, ornamentals and edibles. Every time the team from visit they’re greeted by happy bees, frogs, dragonflies, fish, birds, butterflies and insects galore. Mark designed this garden with the clients’ passion for wildlife in mind, the beached pond stretches along the back deck out of the house with thick planting for habitat-making. Step stones over the water lead to winding paths round edible and ornamental planting leading to hidden seating areas and compost bays.

Summer borders in this Arundel garden 🪴 these borders are a sea of purples, whites and greens during the summer months, with plants such as hydrangeas, verbena, Geranium ‘Rozanne’ and Alchemilla mollis carrying the colour scheme throughout the garden. Clipped Lonicera nitida provides form and structure, while Hakonechloa macra adds soft texture and movement, creating contrast and interest throughout the planting.

Views of the water 🩵 there’s something about water that draws us all to it, especially in heatwaves like these. This Arundel garden design features an organic-shaped pond that sits in the heart of the courtyard surrounded by the main living spaces of the property.
