Another challenge completed. Another incredible effort for children around the world.

A huge congratulations to Rikvit Sharma, who has successfully completed the 55-mile Pedal Causeway Coast challenge in support of SDG's Charity Partner of the Year, .

Rikvit took on the challenge as part of our Champion for Children fundraising campaign, helping to raise awareness and vital funds for children facing poverty, conflict and emergencies around the world.

A massive thank you to Rikvit for giving up his time, taking on the miles and proudly representing SDG for such an important cause.

With both Stevie Murphy and Rikvit Sharma now completing their cycling challenges, our Champion for Children campaign continues to gather momentum—but we're not finished yet.

arrigtwohill 38kV Substation Basement – installed in just 4 days

What normally takes up to 12 weeks was installed in just 4 days. The Carrigtwohill 38kV Substation project demonstrates how modern precast construction methods are helping to transform the delivery of critical infrastructure.

Working alongside ESB Networks, the ESB Engineering and Major Projects team, and TLI Group, Banagher Precast Concrete developed and supplied a precision-manufactured precast basement solution that was installed on site in just four days. By comparison, traditional in-situ construction methods can take up to 12 weeks to complete, delivering a significant programme saving while reducing disruption on site.

The precast units form the foundation for the control room, transformer plinths and associated services, providing a safer, more efficient and more repeatable approach to below-ground substation construction. The project highlights the growing role that off-site manufacturing can play in improving quality, certainty and speed across infrastructure projects.

SDG supplied BT Innovation Turnbuckle connection systems to support the assembly of the precast elements. Designed for fast and accurate installation, the dry mechanical connection system eliminates the need for specialist tools and curing periods, allowing elements to be connected efficiently and loaded immediately after installation.

Alongside the programme benefits, the solution also delivered a number of sustainability advantages, including reduced concrete waste, lower vehicle movements, improved dimensional accuracy, leaner manufacturing processes, 36% GGBS concrete content and the use of 100% recycled steel.

For precast manufacturers, consulting engineers and infrastructure contractors, projects such as Carrigtwohill demonstrate how innovative precast solutions and modern connection technologies can help deliver faster, safer and more sustainable construction outcomes.

Hessian is a traditional, biodegradable fabric used in concrete construction to ensure proper curing. By soaking the material and draping it over fresh concrete, it acts as a reservoir that retains water, slows evaporation, and prevents structural shrinkage cracks.

How to Use Hessian Effectively:
- Pre-wet: Soak the hessian cloth before laying it on the concrete so it doesn't absorb moisture directly from the fresh mix.
- Lay and Secure: Roll the fabric over the slab or wrap it around vertical columns. Weight the edges down with boards or bricks so it doesn't blow away.
- Keep Saturated: Consistently spray water onto the hessian so the fabric never dries out, ensuring the concrete remains continuously moist.
- Add a Plastic Layer: In hot or windy conditions, cover the wet hessian with a layer of plastic sheeting (like polythene). This stops the water from evaporating rapidly.

Why the Process Works
Maximises Hydration: Concrete needs continuous moisture to trigger the chemical reactions (hydration) required to reach its designed compressive strength.
Controls Temperature: It provides thermal protection, helping prevent the concrete from freezing in cold weather or overheating in direct sunlight.
