You don’t always need full architectural drawings to start.

Sometimes it begins with a WhatsApp message, a rough sketch, a few measurements and an idea.

From there, the space can be built into a 3D model, checked as a proof, and then turned into a finished visual or animation.

That’s where 3D helps.

It turns a rough idea into something you can actually understand, discuss and change before work starts.

Your builder can get everything right — and you can still be disappointed with the finished result.
The drawings can be correct.
The work can be built properly.
Nobody necessarily made a mistake.
But the room might feel smaller than you imagined, the garden might disappear more than expected, or the roof space might not feel anything like it did on paper.
That’s why, before asking “Can this be built?”, there’s another question worth asking:
“Can I actually picture what I’m agreeing to?”
Better to understand it before the work starts than discover it afterwards.

Astra 6 is opening up some seriously interesting possibilities for architects, builders and developers.
You still bring the important part — the project knowledge, drawings, models, experience and decisions.
AI can now help turn that information into something far more visual and interactive: presentations, 360° tours, floor-plan navigation, project imagery and client experiences that are easier to understand.
For me, this isn’t about replacing experience. It’s about using better tools to present that experience.
I’m testing how far this can go with real architectural workflows.

If you can’t picture a room, you don’t understand a level, you’re unsure where a window sits, or you simply don’t know what something means — ask.
Don’t assume everybody else understands it so you should too.
You’re the person paying for it. And you’re the person who has to live with it afterwards.
A question before the work starts is easy.
Changing it once it’s built can be a very different story.”

I’ve been looking at ASTRA this weekend, and AI inside SketchUp is starting to get interesting.

But I don’t think this is a “press a button and everything is perfect” situation.

There will still be mistakes.

And if you don’t understand SketchUp, design, or construction, you may not even know what those mistakes are.

Where I think it becomes powerful is for people who already know what they’re doing.

AI can get you to a starting point faster.

Then your knowledge takes over.

That’s the bit I’m interested in.

AI can build the geometry.

You still need to understand the building.
