I've made the difficult decision to stop providing electrical services for the foreseeable future.
I would like to thank you all for your custom over the past 3 years. It's been busy, challenging, exciting & motivating and I've thoroughly enjoyed it, but it's now time to take a new path to allow me to spend more time with my young family whilst developing my career.

A consumer unit replacement nightmare!

Removal of the existing CU revealed single insulated cables within a false wall. It became apparent that the consumer unit had been previously relocated (very badly) to a lower level!

Replacement required removal of the false wall, extending all circuits using maintenance free joint boxes and then installing the meter tails in metallic flexible conduit to comply with regulations.

What should have been a straight forward swap, turned into a lot more!

Want to update your old R80 or R63 spot lights but don't want to damage the ceiling or repair the large holes?

These downlights conceal the large cutout from the old light fittings and use a far more energy efficient LED lamps whilst producing a higher Lumen output. They have also been fitted with fire hoods to comply with current regulations.

This picture is from a recent call out.
The client reported that their ground floor lighting had been flickering randomly for a few weeks and then stopped working completely.

Testing identified that the line conductor of a twin and earth cable was broken (no continuity). I wired in a piece of cable temporarily to prove that this cable was the fault.

Whilst identifying a route to replace the cable permanently, I noticed a wireless doorbell reciever that had been fixed to the wall by the previous homeowner. I took the reciever off the wall and found that it covered a large hole where the screw had penetrated the lighting cable. A very bad bodge had resulted in the line conducter barely being joined causing arcing and melting the terminal block and cable insulation.

I joined the cable appropriately (still providing double insulation) and the client now has operational lighting again.

If you do accidently drill or screw through a cable, I'd strongly suggest that you contact an electrician rather than trying to make the repair yourself.

If anyone is ever in need of window/gutter/facia/door cleaning in and around Andover, R Jacobs Window Cleaning Services. are excellent.

I personally have used a couple of different companies to clean our windows and Russ is different because he takes his time to make sure the windows are actually clean. Highly recommended by me!

A recent installation of a Zappi car charger and socket installation for a plug in hybrid charger.

Here's a little delight that I found in a loft yesterday. Supplied from the lighting circuit, it's quite an easy option when you need a socket in your loft!😱🙄

Consumer unit replacement carried out last week. The old fuse box had modifications (badly) carried out to assist with the sale of the property!
It's now compliant with BS7671:2018 and if there's a fault only one circuit will isolate, as opposed to the whole house in the previous setup!

How many people have had electricians add switchgear or accessories for car chargers/solar into their existing meter box?

It's not actually permitted; the Distribution Network Operator are within their right to ask you to remove that equipment. If you check your Energy Supply Agreement (ESA) it will state that the meter cabinet is reserved for supplier equipment only (most cabinets also have it embossed on the inside cover), yet thousands of electricians still install in the cabinet and the client knows no better.

Here's a new meter box I installed to allow fitment of client's new equipment, without fear of any repercussions from the DNO at a later date. Whilst I was at it I also straightened up the original box that had been installed out of level at the original installation!
