Always a thrill to find a pair of oak crucks during renovations and alterations of a cottage. Quite rare. Hard to date but likely early 17th C. The earliest crucks are lapped at the top and have an oak ridge beam turned to match the roof slopes. These seem to be 'upper crucks' connected to a tie beam under the floor.

I happened to revisit this intricate and spectacular extension at Rydal yesterday. 5 years old and still looks like new....
