Sad news for Suffolk's iconic horse breed as charity's future remains uncertain ...

There is growing concern for the future of The Suffolk Punch Trust Stud, the charity dedicated to protecting one of Britain's oldest and most critically endangered horse breeds.

The charity's historic 120-acre farm and visitor centre at Hollesley, near Woodbridge, has been placed on the market for £2.4 million, raising fears that the trust could close permanently.

The trust, which has bred Suffolk Punch horses at the historic Colony Stud since 1759, announced the closure of its visitor centre, café and shop earlier this year due to rising costs and financial pressures.

The future of the trust's horses is also causing concern, with efforts reportedly underway to find suitable permanent homes for those remaining.

Former Suffolk Horse Society president Nigel Oakley described the situation as “very, very sad”, acknowledging the tremendous efforts made by staff to preserve and protect the breed.

For generations, the Suffolk Punch has been a proud symbol of the county's agricultural heritage, and the possible loss of such an important breeding centre is deeply concerning for those dedicated to preserving these magnificent animals.

The Charity Commission has confirmed it is aware of financial concerns surrounding the trust and is assessing the information available.

A sad and uncertain chapter for one of Suffolk's most treasured heritage breeds.

Here’s a surprising detail: Aldeburgh’s building was not called the Moot Hall until Victorian times. It is still used for local governance today and also houses the Aldeburgh Museum.

Moot Halls in medieval Britain are deeply rooted in the Anglo-Saxon tradition of local governance and community justice.

Before councils met in town halls, local decisions could be made beneath a tree or on a hillside.

In Anglo-Saxon and medieval England, a moot was a meeting or assembly. Courts and local officials gathered at recognised places, sometimes beside a tree or rock, on a hill, or even at an ancient burial mound. These meetings helped communities settle disputes and manage local affairs.
