For a UK-based manufacturer of plastic pipe systems, flexibility is essential when handling large-section pipework and the customised angle and bend connections required by end customers. To support final assembly operations, Hoist & Winch Ltd has supplied and commissioned a turnkey package of eight aluminium mobile gantry cranes offering 2-ton safe working load (Swl), each equipped with a 110V single-phase electric chain hoist.

The equipment is installed in a dedicated section of the manufacturer's final assembly area, where pipe sections – used to protect electrical cables – are fitted with angle and bend connections.

The company supplies customers across a wide range of industries, including the growing datacentre sector. Flexibility was therefore a key consideration in the specification. Manufactured by Reid Lifting, the aluminium mobile gantries supplied by Hoist & Winch feature adjustable height and span width, allowing the configuration of each crane to suit the available workspace and the dimensions of the pipes that require handling.

With a maximum working hook height of 6 metres and bridge span of 4 metres, the cranes provide sufficient capacity and reach for the largest pipe sections currently processed by the company. They also offer an element of future-proofing should the manufacturer introduce larger sections.

Mobility is another critical feature. Each gantry features large pneumatic-tyred wheels, making the cranes easier to manoeuvre while improving stability when travelling under load. This capability is particularly useful when moving across raised cable ramps or small floor imperfections.

The four wheels incorporate 360-degree swivel action with directional locking at 90-degree intervals, providing operators with further flexibility when positioning the gantries. Once correctly positioned over the workstation assembly jigs, manually operated heavy-duty parking brakes securely hold each crane in place. Here, the lifting systems play a vital role in the assembly process, safely supporting pipe sections while angle or bend connections are fitted and adhesives are allowed to cure.

“It's a deceptively demanding application because the lifting equipment needs to combine substantial capacity with the freedom to move around the assembly area,” explains Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “The aluminium gantries give the customer that flexibility, while the 2-ton Swl hoists offer the reliable lifting performance needed for these large and varied pipe sections.”

To provide effective and electrically safe lifting within the assembly environment, Hoist & Winch installed heavy-duty 2-ton Swl Yale/Loadstar 110V single-phase electric chain hoists. The low-voltage supply is particularly appropriate because the gantries require powering via a trailing floor cable as the company moves them between workstations. Hoist and pendant control cables are managed across each crane bridge using a taut-wire festoon catenary system, helping to maintain orderly cable routing while allowing the hoists to travel along the bridge.

Following installation, Hoist & Winch completed LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) inspection and testing of each complete lifting system and issued the appropriate LOLER Thorough Examination reports, providing complete peace of mind for the customer.

On-site operator training covered equipment functionality, hoist components and operating controls, including top and bottom limit switches and emergency-stop functions. Training also addressed periodic checks and lubrication, together with annual inspection, servicing and certification requirements. Each operator was given practical experience in using the equipment, ensuring safe and effective operation of the new lifting systems from day one.

Maintaining critical equipment across a large industrial processing facility requires lifting systems tailored to the specific demands of each application area. For a UK dockside seed-crush and refinery plant, Hoist & Winch Ltd delivered a turnkey package of eight high-quality electric chain and wire rope hoists to support vital site-wide maintenance operations. Installed as part of a multi-year plant improvement programme, the high-performance hoists serve a variety of maintenance functions across indoor and outdoor process areas, including a quayside pump station, an ATEX-rated mineral oil extraction zone and several general production locations.

Following close customer consultation, Hoist & Winch specified and supplied equipment from three renowned European manufacturers, selecting individual hoist designs according to each location’s operational requirements.

One of the most demanding applications involved the maintenance of process water pumps situated below sea level at the dockside. To support lifting operations, Hoist & Winch supplied two GIS electric chain hoists, each offering 6-ton safe working load (Swl). Capacity, reliability, travel performance and hook coverage were all key considerations during equipment selection.

The GIS hoists feature two-speed motion, cross-travel limit switches and remote radio control. Given their exposed quayside location, the hoists were also supplied with weather-resistant canvas covers and galvanised steel parking enclosures for protection when not in use.

Elsewhere on site, maintenance activities within the mineral oil extraction area required a lifting solution suitable for operation in a potentially explosive atmosphere. Hoist & Winch specified an Italkrane YY series 2-ton Swl electric chain hoist certified for ATEX applications up to Zone 1 II B T4.

The hoist incorporates flameproof electrical protection, anti-corrosion finishes and anti-sparking components, including brass trolley wheels, load hook and anti-tip devices. A low-headroom design, two-speed operation, cross-travel limit switches and radio control functionality further enhance its suitability for lifting vessel hoods and other equipment during maintenance procedures. A Hoist & Winch CompEx-certified engineer undertook the installation of all ATEX electrical connections.

For the indoor and outdoor process plant locations, Hoist & Winch supplied Stahl ST series electric chain hoists with 3.2-ton Swl. These units provide maintenance teams with a reliable means of lifting equipment between ground level and elevated work areas.

A separate maintenance location required significantly higher lifting capacity, leading Hoist & Winch to specify a Stahl SH series wire rope hoist with 9-ton Swl. Here, low-headroom configuration was essential to maximise available lifting height while accommodating larger process plant components. Across locations, the hoists were again supplied with two-speed operation, cross-travel limit switches and radio control systems to improve operational control and positioning accuracy.

Electrical power distribution was tailored to suit the constraints of each installation area. In general process locations, festoon cable C-track systems were mounted alongside runway beams. For the dockside and ATEX installations, however, specialised festoon trolley arrangements running along the bottom fl**ge of the hoist runway beams were employed to accommodate beam configurations and site clearance/access requirements.

Following installation, Hoist & Winch conducted comprehensive testing and certification of every lifting system. All hoist and runway beam installations underwent LOLER inspection, dynamic load testing and 125% proof-load testing before entering service. The company issued LOLER Thorough Examination reports for all installed systems.

“Every area of this facility presented its own technical challenges, from dockside lifting operations and ATEX requirements to low-headroom maintenance applications,” says Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “By selecting the most appropriate hoist technology for each location, we were able to provide the customer with a safe, reliable and long-term lifting solution that supports efficient maintenance across the entire plant.”

Hoist & Winch completed its work on site by delivering operator training, covering safe use of the equipment, operating controls, limit switches, emergency stop functions, routine inspections, lubrication requirements and annual certification obligations.

When constructing a modern high-speed flour mill, efficient installation and long-term maintenance of plant equipment demand a carefully planned lifting solution. For a recent project, the main contractor turned to Hoist & Winch Ltd, one of the UK's leading lifting equipment companies. Hoist & Winch specified, supplied and installed a two-phase hoisting solution capable of supporting both the plant installation phase and ongoing maintenance activities once the facility became operational.

The project required a flexible approach. During installation, contractors required a high-capacity hoist capable of lifting heavy process equipment through a dedicated lift shaft. Upon completion of plant installation and commissioning, however, the requirement shifted to a permanent, high-speed lifting solution to support routine maintenance of the mill’s processing equipment.

Following site meetings and consultations with plant designers and project managers from the main contractor, Hoist & Winch proposed a turnkey lifting package that could meet both requirements.

For the short-term installation phase, Hoist & Winch supplied a 10t safe working load (SWL) JDN air-powered chain hoist offering 30m of lifting height. Mounted in an air motor-powered trolley, the hoist was complemented by a portable diesel-powered air compressor and air hoses. Hoist & Winch also undertook installation and commissioning of the hoist, along with load testing and LOLER certification of the customer’s pre-installed hoist runway beam. Operator handover training was subsequently provided for plant installation contractors.

Installing the temporary hoist system formed phase 1 of the project. To facilitate this work, the site scaffolding contractor constructed a platform over the lift shaft in accordance with Hoist & Winch specifications. The 10t air-powered hoist unit was raised to installation level using a temporarily mounted 2t SWL JDN air-powered chain hoist fixed to the underside of the runway beam.

Once positioned beneath the beam, installation of the 10t hoist took place using a dedicated lifting arrangement comprising a pair of T-shaped lifting frames and four 1t SWL manual chain blocks. This configuration enabled engineers to mount the hoist trolley safely to the runway beam by initially opening and then closing the trolley width around the beam section.

Following installation checks and connecting the air supply, Hoist & Winch performed dynamic load testing of both the hoist and runway beam using a 10t test load over the full 30m lifting height. This process was followed by a 125% static proof load test at low level. With testing successfully complete, Hoist & Winch delivered operator handover training to the installation contractors responsible for lifting the mill’s process plant equipment into position.

Phase 2 of the project involved removing the temporary air-powered hoist and installing the permanent lifting solution: a 3.2t SWL Stahl electric wire rope hoist with 30m lifting height. Mounted on a motor-powered trolley and operating with a single rope fall, the hoist unit delivers a very high main lifting speed of 16 m/min to minimise plant downtime during maintenance lifts through the access shaft and 2.6 m/min slow lifting speed for precise load laydown at the load landing level.

Hoist & Winch conducted installation, commissioning, load testing and LOLER certification of the permanent hoist system, before providing handover training for the mill’s maintenance personnel.

“Projects like this demonstrate the value of careful planning and technical collaboration to deliver safe, efficient lifting solutions that support both the construction and long-term operation of complex industrial facilities,” says Hoist & Winch Director Andy Allen. “We subsequently secured the contract for annual hoist inspection and maintenance.”

13/05/2025

Reinforcing the piers that support a major UK rail viaduct spanning a river estuary is no easy task, which is exactly why the specialist marine subcontractor appointed to undertake this project approached Hoist & Winch Ltd for the optimal lifting solution.

The brief provided to Hoist & Winch was for the supply of a turnkey lifting solution comprising two sets of four hoist units suitable for a marine environment. These hoists were to be suspended from temporary scaffold structures fixed to two separate motorised floating pontoons. As part of an innovative approach to a complex challenge, the hoist-mounted pontoons would serve to locate special horseshoe-shaped reinforcing concrete collars either side of one of the bridge piers at high tide, prior to joining the collar halves together above the water with connection pins. Finally, the collar halves would require lowering to the river estuary bed for permanent fixing to the piers with concrete at low tide, thus providing the necessary reinforcement.

To establish the optimal package of hire equipment, as well as site installation, load testing and additional technical support services, Hoist & Winch consulted extensively with both the motorised pontoon designers and installation personnel responsible for lowering the special concrete collars into position.

After reviewing all the information from project stakeholders, Hoist & Winch subsequently proposed eight JDN top-hook suspension air-powered hoist. Each of these 3t swl (safe working load) hoists featured its own heavy-duty steel lubricator coupled with appropriately sized air supply hoses. The two sets of four hoists units would be operated from their own individually connected, heavy-duty (brass) two-button pendant control.

In order to monitor the load applied to each hoist unit and assist with delivering a balanced collar lowering procedure, Hoist & Winch also provided eight telemetry load cells of bow-shackle design. These load cells served to connect each hoist unit to its local scaffold anchor support position, transmitting individual hoist load data via radio signal to a central laptop display. Armed with this data, the appointed person directing lifting operations could instruct each hoist operator accordingly to ensure the load was evenly distributed between each set of four hoists and that each collar was lowered into position while remaining level.

Prior to commencing the process of installing and lowering the concrete collars, Hoist & Winch carried out the installation of the eight air-powered hoist units. This work included pre-use inspection, static load/deflection testing, and LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) certification of the temporary scaffold structure and complete hoisting system.

Hoist & Winch also provided technical consultancy as part of the overall package, delivering guidance on important project areas such as lifting equipment legislation, lifting operation planning and management, and specification and procurement of the portable diesel-powered air compressors to power the hoist units. In addition, the company delivered full handover training for operators.

Both the specialist marine subcontractor and end client were extremely pleased with the final outcome, which saw the successful installation of two sets of trial pier-reinforcing concrete collars to the viaduct as part of a safe and controlled process.

Hoist & Winch is pillar of support in overhead crane project.

The design and installation by Hoist & Winch Ltd of replacement end carriages for two overhead cranes reached its conclusion recently with the end user expressing complete satisfaction in the outcome. Previously, the 2-ton swl (safe working load) manual overhead cranes were suffering from potentially dangerous crabbing problems due to the original design of the end carriages. Hoist & Winch thus had a responsibility to work expediently and professionally, with the aim of bringing this concerning issue to a safe resolution.

The world’s largest producer of spirits is now benefiting from a turnkey package of three Italkrane ATEX-rated electric chain hoists supplied by Hoist & Winch Ltd. Operational within a new extension of the Scotland-based distillery, the 2-ton swl (safe working load) hoists raise and lower sealed vessel lids and baskets containing raw materials used in the production of gin.

Among the challenges of this demanding project was a restriction in the overall height of the new building due to local planning laws. In turn, only limited headroom is available for lifting operations over the vessels. Critical for the application, therefore, was the specification by Hoist & Winch of Italkrane YY series electric chain hoists featuring a low-headroom design. The ATEX specification of the hoists is necessary due to the vapours and fumes produced in the manufacture of alcohol-based products.
