A wee piece of Airdrie’s history uncovered on the job! 🧱

While renovating a local property, we came across these old bricks hidden within the original building — and noticed they were stamped “AIRDRIE.”

After doing a bit of digging, it turns out these weren’t just bricks used locally — they were actually made here in Airdrie.

The AIRDRIE brickmark is recorded as coming from Airdrie Brickworks at Petersburn, which operated from around 1938 until 1978. The old brickworks stood on land which was later built over and is now part of the Broomhill Park area. (Brocross)

Airdrie and the surrounding Monklands area once had a huge industrial heritage, with coal mining, ironworks, fireclay works and brickmaking all playing their part in building the towns and communities we know today.

It’s quite something to think that these bricks were made just a few miles away, used to build an Airdrie property decades ago, and have now turned up again while we’re renovating that same property.

One of the best parts of working on older buildings is finding things like this — little pieces of local history that have been sitting hidden away for generations.

Needless to say, these ones aren’t going in the skip! 😄🧱

HELP WANTED - Memories of Whiterigg, Stanrigg and Darngavel

We are currently working on something exciting, that we can hopefully share with you soon!
But as part of that we need your help! We are keen to hear from anyone who -
- Lived in Whiterigg, Stanrigg or Whiterigg
- Had parents, grandparents or other relatives who lived there
- Had relatives who worked in the local mines
- Has family connections to the Stanrigg disaster
- Has personal memories or stories passed down through their family
- Has old photographs, documents, newspaper cuttings or other memorabillia relating to the villages or people who lived there

We are especially interested in hearing the personal side of these communities, what life was like, where people worked, the houses and streets, local characters, schools, shops, friendships, family life and generally what people remember about the villages before they disappeared.

If your family has a connection to any of these villages, or know someone who has, we would love to hear from you!

You can comment below, tag people, send us a private message and we can get chatting. Photographs and memories would be greatly appreciated so please feel free to post them below, if you don’t mind sharing.

Even if your memories come from a parent, grandparent or other relative who is no longer with us, please still get in touch. Those stories are an important part of preserving the history and memory of these villages.

Please feel free to share this post with anyone who may have a connection and whos stories deserve to be told!
