Finished! Learned so much doing this and it certainly won't be my last mandolin. The only thing I'm not that happy with is the sunburst on the spruce top. It's sooo hard to do a hand rubbed burst on carved spruce. On maple (the back, sides and neck) it's ridiculously easy in comparison. Not to worry the next burst I do on spruce will be done using an airbrush. The finish is oil varnish with french polish on top - a lovely finish which I'll use again for sure. Sounds great to my ear - loud and woody. But you'll not be hearing a sound clip of it from me any time soon as I made it to learn on!

Putting some shellac on top of the oil varnish and it's starting to develop a nice soft gloss. Feels like silk as well!

Jointing mandolin plates in the form of wedges has not been an easy business (for me anyway). The halves cant be stacked on top of each other and planed together. The addition of the jointing plane to my arsenal has transformed a frustrating job into a pleasant one that takes 5 minutes and leaves an absolutely perfect joint. Couldn't be more pleased 😁👍

Next mandolin back to be made using repurposed viola wood. I'll have to make the sides from pieces in my own stash but that's fine.
