Some of the weird and wonderful things found in soil.

Here we have a root feeding nematode, the only detrimental functional group of nematodes. These guys are preyed upon by fungi - which lasso them - and by predatory nematodes, which will preferentially prey upon root feeders over other nematodes.

Then we have some good news in the form of some beneficial fungal hyphae.
Such hyphae could be mycorrhizal (partnering with plants) or saprobic
(breaking down organic material) either way it helps feed the plants and improves the soil’s structure.

These organisms where found in ex agricultural fields on an newly started rewilding project. They’re doing great stuff to improve the soil and all that relies upon health soil.
Check them out at Rewilding Denmarkfield

Getting your soil analysed for biology is the clearest way of putting numbers to ecological recovery.

So you’d like to plot your progress on your journey to healthier land? Soil biology is the way to go.

Your results will plot you on the image. You will know where your soil is at in terms of succession.

We know that fungal soils support more life than bacterial soils because of the plants they select for.

So why not use plants as your guide?
The plants may not be there, if the grazing pressure is very high, if glyphosate has been used, if there has been a clearfell or change of land use the soil may be ready to support more life but not able due to above ground pressures.

Plotting your soil on the image to give you baseline data and then returning to have your soils re-tested two years later can measure your progress and give you a tool to demonstrate the gains made.

We’ve recently been working with rewilding projects to help them plot and measure their progress.

Humankind needs soilkind to improve the health and resilience of our soils.

No need for inorganic fertilisers ever again
No need to worry about weeds or pests
No need for any chemicals, ever.

Just test your soil for biology, make a compost to provide the missing biology, two or three applications later and you’re set!
