Fabric of the Land

Fabric of the Land Fabric of the Land is a series of open submission exhibitions exploring links between art and scienc

Fabric of the Land is a quest to investigate the inspiration given to art by examination of characteristics of the physical landscape. Since our inaugural Fabric of the Land in 2009 we have celebrated the complementary visualisation of Earth’s geology as manifest in landscape from which artists derive their inspiration with the science associated with the same subjects. In 2014 Fabric of the Land

provides an open brief for emerging and established artists to express their inspiration from the landscape and escape from the constraints of accuracy and precision that are inherent in scientific description. Through sponsorship from DANA Petroleum we are delighted to once again present the Fabric of the Land Awards - with one award of £1,500 and two of £500 to be presented during the private view event on Friday 12 September 2014. Fabric of the Land is making an exciting temporary move for 2014, taking the department of geology & petroleum geology, University of Aberdeen, to a city centre location. The exhibition will take place in Union Square, off Market Street, in a loft style unit overlooking Aberdeen Harbour. The exhibition is now in it's sixth year and is going from strength to strength with entries form all over the UK and worldwide. Applications for 2014 are now open - head to the website to download application packs www.fabricoftheland.com

Thanks to Artworks Scotland for using Fabric of the Land as a case study in their latest research.

See the link to hear St Marchar teachers and designer Morag McGee talk about embedding creativity, plans and flexibility into the curriculum as well as what an artist brings to a school. How they worked across departments, linking the project to the curriculum and successful planning and negotiation to produce the Fabric of the Land outreach and education project 2014. The education project was delivered in partnership with Aberdeen City Councils Creative Learning Dept.

To all our Facebook followers we would like to let you know due to loosing our sponsor for Fabric of the Land last year and not being able to secure sponsorship for 2015 we are unable to deliver the open submission exhibition this year.

It is with regret from all the team but due to the current climate we just can't raise enough funding to make this happen for 2015, however we are working towards delivering FOL in 2016 which we hope will be bigger and better!

We will keep everyone posted on our developments via Facebook and the FOL website.

The winner of the Fabric of the Land 2014 award went to a piece of work that showed ingenuity in it's technique and we would like to congratulate Elvira Wersche born in Germany and now living in the Netherlands for her artwork - ‘Sammlung Weltensand - Be on the move to Aberdeen’ on being this years winner.

The judges said –
‘Elvira Wersche ‘Sammlung’ is an exemplary example of commitment and dedication to a process – the accumulation of samples of sand from different locations around the world. Whilst simple in concept, the ex*****on of the drawings themselves is meticulous. The resulting installation is fragile and beautiful, like many of our environments. There is also a sense of timeless fascination with the innumerable nuances of colour which takes us all the way back to cave painting and our desire to make sense of this place where we live. ‘

‘Whilst all the entries in this year’s Fabric of the Land richly celebrate the myriad ways in which artists engage with the natural environment, the three winning artworks stood out (for the judges) because they convey a sense of each artist being engaged in a practice as rigorous and dedicated as the scientist in the laboratory.

If we try to find a link between the three it is perhaps that in their own way they confront the ephemeral: grains of sand, a breaking wave, insignificant fragments. Of course, the permanence or non-permanence of our planet is a subject that occupies art today as much as it does science (if not politicians). ‘

After much deliberation the judges commended:

Jen Bradley from Glasgow who studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen for her artwork ‘Registration’

The judges said -
‘Jen Bradley’s ‘Registration’ is reminiscent of the Victorian age’s love of collecting and categorisation, a structured arrangement of detritus that invites the viewer to look for relationships, patterns, connections - which may or may not be there. ‘

and

Holly Prentice from Edinburgh for her artwork ‘Shipping Forecast (5)’

The judges said –
‘Holly Prentice’s ‘Shipping Forecast 5’ – takes an everyday occurrence and transforms it into both an object that exudes weight and substance and an image that transmits an ethereal feeling of a fleeting moment: one I’m sure we have all experienced and wondered at – the certainty and repetition of the tide.’

We thoroughly enjoyed installing today at the new venue. More than half the work up on the wall - good progress made. Still got a lot to do but broke the back of it. We are very excited to meet an artist that has travelled from The Netherlands tomorrow to install our largest site specific piece to date. Getting very excited for the private view on Friday.

Fabric of the Land exhibition starting to be placed - our new space gives us so much room to move around in. In comparison to previous installs in laboratory 118 it's great to have more space around the work!
