One of our projects moved from paper to ground last week. We called in to see the first stage taking shape...
Surprisingly the site was marked out but deserted. Just the ground works director was present. He explained that the team were too exhausted to work that day, because on their first day on site, the truck transporting the 25 tonne digger had broken down at the bottom of the mountain. Such was their commitment to break ground, they decided to drive the digger up. As the caterpillar tracks would damage the road, they placed four tyres on the ground in front of each track, and then gradually inched the digger forward. Stopped, picked them up and did it all over again for 200m of vertical ascent. It took four men, four hours. Pretty impressive in 25 degrees heat.
