Vanishing architecture

The building features a boomerang-shaped office floor plan and a ceramic-printed glass façade with vertical and horizontal gradations.
Its design responds to the site's historical context – the former location of Tokyo's first railway station and the nearby Hamarikyu Gardens, a former shōgun's estate – by integrating a contemporary architectural expression with the surrounding urban and historical landscape.

“Jean Nouvel: Without the Artist, Architecture Disappears”
5th anniversary | Museum of Art Pudong

Through a diverse range of formats – moving images, scale models, archival materials, and faithful reconstructions of studio environments – this is the largest solo exhibition of Nouvel’s work ever mounted, regarding the number of projects presented.

It breaks the mold of the conventional architecture exhibition and offers a panoramic portrait of more than 50 years of the French architect’s achievements. Beyond his signature architectural works, it features more than 100 industrial design projects.

Thus, visitors not only encounter the architectural blueprints that have transformed city skylines, but also the furniture and objects especially designed for the projects, exploring a lesser-known side of Nouvel's practice.

Beginning June 27, 2026, the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) will present its milestone 5th anniversary exhibition – “Jean Nouvel: Without the Artist, Architecture Disappears.”

The MAP is Jean Nouvel’s cultural landmark for Shanghai. Its suprematist geometric lines, flexible gallery spaces, expansive manipulation of natural light, and deep dialogue with the Lujiazui skyline and Huangpu River together make this “white box” a work of total art in itself.

This presentation – Jean Nouvel’s largest solo exhibition to date, merging architecture and design – will use the building he designed as his stage. Using his career as his narrative, a deep dialogue is opened in the scale and setting well-suited for this exhibition.
