Forget AI. Nature invented parametric design. 🌿

Millions of years before our first script, evolution was already running simulations: the logarithmic spiral of a nautilus, the load-distributing lattice of a golden chanterelle, the ultra-compact coding of DNA.

At Vincent Callebaut Architectures, Paris , biomimicry isn’t a moodboard, it’s our R&D protocol. We translate living strategies into structures that grow smarter, use fewer resources, and adapt to climate stress.

Less material. Less waste. Less Energy. More performance.

❄️ -10°C IN SUMMER, WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING
What if this was tomorrow’s housing?

⛱️ As bioclimatic architecture, PARASOLS prevents apartments from overheating in the first place, instead of trying to cool them down afterwards.

In Montpellier, PARASOLS proposes to transform plot G2 of the ZAC Port Marianne République into a habited park, inspired by the structure of umbrella pines shaped by the mistral wind.

🌳 Designed by Vincent Callebaut Architectures, Paris, this project embodies regenerative bioclimatic architecture, where summer comfort, low-carbon construction and living systems drive the design.

🌞 Bioclimatic architecture tailored to the Mediterranean climate
PARASOLS applies key bioclimatic principles - orientation, thermal mass, solar shading and natural ventilation - to create a favorable microclimate year-round.
- Continuous loggias, setbacks and planted circular balconies form a built canopy: more shade in summer, more light in winter.
- Optimized cross-ventilation through strategic orientation and building porosity, reducing reliance on air conditioning.
- Thermal mass and time lag achieved with heavy and bio-based materials, smoothing out summer heat peaks.
- Geocooling wind chimneys harnessing the ground’s thermal inertia, with zero kilowatt-hour consumption.
Result: up to -10°C of natural cooling in summer, without active air-conditioning systems.

♻️ Measurable responses to urban climate challenges
PARASOLS demonstrates that collective housing can become positive climate infrastructure:
- > 50% bio-based materials, including a hybrid low-carbon concrete and CLT structure.
- Up to 70% water autonomy through greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting.enov
- 50 tonnes of CO₂ captured annually thanks to integrated vegetation.
- Preservation of century-old pines and ecological continuity with the neighboring arboretum, creating a true urban cooling island.

🏡 Housing that creates use-value and social connection
- Cross-ventilated apartments, garden balconies, green roofs and generous bicycle storage.
- A design that combines environmental performance, biodiversity and quality of life, meeting residents’ expectations in the face of heatwaves.

HOW DID RODIN INSPIRE OUR SPIRAL TOWER IN TAIWAN ?

In 1908, Auguste Rodin created The Cathedral: two hands rising and meeting in a powerful gesture, transforming the human body into architecture.

“There is a history of hands.”

For Vincent Callebaut, this sculptural language became a poetic source of inspiration for Tao Zhu Yin Yuan, a residential tower in Taipei where architecture twists, rises and opens towards the sky.

From Rodin’s intertwined hands to the tower’s rotating volumes, the same gestures reappear: verticality, movement, tension and connection.

Yet Tao Zhu Yin Yuan is not a literal reproduction of The Cathedral. It is an architectural reinterpretation of its spirit translated into a double-helix structure inspired by DNA, the code of life.

With its 90-degree rotation, planted balconies and more than 23,000 trees and plants, the tower becomes a spiral forest: a living dialogue between sculpture, architecture and nature.

“Nature is all motion.”

From Rodin’s Cathedral to Callebaut's Tao Zhu Yin Yuan, a gesture becomes a building, and a building becomes a living organism.

The most advanced architect on Earth has never used a computer. Nature doesn’t waste material. Why should architecture? 🌿

Long before algorithms and computational design, nature spent millions of years refining forms, structures, and systems. From the radial geometry of a lily pad to the delicate structure of dragonfly wings, every living organism embodies optimized solutions shaped by evolution.

At Vincent Callebaut Architectures, we draw on these living principles as a source of inspiration, translating patterns of growth, movement, lightness, and resilience into our architectural strategies. Biomimicry is not just an aesthetic reference, it is a methodological framework for designing sustainable, regenerative, and climate-resilient buildings.

By learning from nature’s efficiency, we optimize the quantity of material used in our structures, reducing waste and lowering our carbon footprint. Every gram saved contributes to a lighter, smarter, and more responsible architecture.

🌿⛱️ In an overheated city, shade is infrastructure. So is water. So is biodiversity.

PARASOLS, puts all three at the heart of housing.

In Montpellier, France, this new residential project proposes to transform a development plot in the Port Marianne République district into an “inhabited park”, inspired by the wind-shaped geometry of Mediterranean umbrella pines. 🌳💨

Designed by Vincent Callebaut Architectures, PARASOLS explores a different approach to residential development: one where summer comfort, low-carbon construction and living systems are designed together from the start.

☀️ Climate-responsive by design:
Continuous loggias, planted terraces, stepped volumes and cross-ventilation create a built canopy that provides:
→ more shade in summer
→ more daylight in winter
→ natural ventilation throughout the year
→ up to 10°C of natural cooling in summer

♻️ The targets are equally ambitious:
→ 50%+ bio-based materials, combining low-carbon concrete and CLT
→ up to 70% water autonomy through greywater recycling and rainwater harvesting
→ around 50 tonnes of CO₂ captured every year
→ preservation of century-old pine trees and an ecological connection to the neighbouring arboretum

🏡 Because environmental performance should also improve everyday life.
Cross-ventilated homes. Terraced gardens. Green roofs. Generous bicycle facilities. A building that doesn't simply reduce its impact, but actively contributes to the comfort, biodiversity and resilience of its surroundings.

🏆 Targeting BBCA Excellent · Effinergie Passif · NF Habitat HQE Confort+ · BDO Excellent · RE2020 C-10.

🌍 The next chapter of real estate is not only about building with less.

It is about giving more back to the city.
More biodiversity.
More resilience.
More quality of life.

2050? Too late.

7,300 excess deaths in France following heatwaves.

224,000 people evacuated in Gironde because of wildfires.

250 million people displaced worldwide over the past decade as a result of climate change.

This isn’t the future.
This is happening now.

We built our cities for a climate that no longer exists.

So we need to change the way we build.

The city of tomorrow cannot be just low-carbon.

It must be:

🌿 Cooler.
💧 More permeable.
🌱 Greener.
🦋 Biodiverse.
🏙️ Resilient.

And above all, it must do more than reduce its impact.

It must regenerate.

Regenerate soils.
Restore water cycles.
Cool our neighbourhoods.
Make room for biodiversity.
Transform what already exists instead of consuming more.

This is the paradigm shift defended by Vincent Callebaut Architectures :

From architecture that minimises its impact

→ to architecture that regenerates its environment.

At SIBCA "Low-Carbon Real Estate Show", we talked about the city of 2050.

But the real challenge isn’t 2050.

It’s today.

Because we cannot wait until 2050 to realise that our cities are no longer fit for the climate we live in.

The regeneration of our cities has to start now.

🌿 2050 is not a date.

It is the result of the choices we make today.

🇫🇷🌿 PARASOLS: Residences sculpted like umbrella pines 🌳

Architecture finally draws inspiration from living systems to cool itself. 🍃

In Montpellier, Vincent Callebaut Architectures proposed transforming plot G2 of the ZAC Port Marianne République into a biomimetic building-park whose fluid volumes echo the silhouette of umbrella pines bent by the mistral. 💨🌳

Every continuous loggia, every setback, every terrace has been designed to optimize summer shading, winter sunlight, and natural ventilation… just like a forest canopy. 🌞🌬️

✨ Why PARASOLS changes the game:

🪵 +50% bio-based materials: hybrid low-carbon concrete + CLT structure, hemp/straw/wood fiber insulation, facades in wood, lime, and raw earth

💧 70% water autonomy: greywater recycling + rainwater retention basins to irrigate evapotranspirative vegetation

🌞 -5°C natural cooling in summer thanks to humid depressions, landscaped balconies, and large deciduous trees in the heart of the blocks

🦋 Smart phasing limiting to 60 market-rate units per phase for optimal market fluidity

🌳 Preservation of century-old pines with a 13.5 m unbuildable radius according to Montpellier’s Tree Charter

🏆 Target certifications: BBCA Excellent, Effinergie Passif (CEPnr 35 kWh/m²), NF Habitat HQE Confort+, BDO Excellent, RE2020 C-10

Beyond the numbers, PARASOLS is a biomimetic housing project that captures 50 tonnes of CO₂ per year, regenerates ancestral soils, and weaves a green, blue, and brown corridor in perfect continuity with the neighboring arboretum. 🌍💚

The residences? 100% cross-ventilated, entrance lobbies with 60% transparency, ground-floor duplexes on terraced gardens, inhabited green roofs, 110-140 m² bike rooms 90% glazed… Each dwelling is a sprouted seed for all, in harmony with the living. 🌱🏡
