40°C+ all week here in the Poitou-Charentes, and this mediterranean swimming pool garden hasn’t received a single drop of supplemental water.

No irrigation systems. No signs of stress.

In fact, it’s doing the exact opposite of dying—it’s thriving. Look closely between the stones and you’ll see the next generation already taking over: self-seeded babies of Nepeta, Euphorbia, Thyme, and Perovskia are actively popping up, completely comfortable in the baking heat.

As our regional weather swings violently between intense summer drought and waterlogged winter wet, the traditional lawn-and-border model is failing. It’s forcing us toward a new philosophy.

Designing a climate-resilient garden doesn't mean settling for a barren desert landscape. It’s about structural visual literacy—arranging tough, Mediterranean and other native plants into deep mulches that protect the soil, lock in microclimate moisture, and look stunning 12 months a year.

The finest spring landscapes in the Poitou Charentes are quietly engineered in the heat of the previous summer.

While it might seem early to be thinking about next year's tulips, narcissi and alliums, the reality of premium garden design is that the race has already begun. I am officially opening my books for client bulb orders, as my specialist trade suppliers have launched their pre-orders. If you want a truly spectacular spring display for your garden the time to curate your list is now.

Why the summer rush?

The Best Varieties Fly First: the rarest, most architecturally striking or dependable cultivars almost always sell out during this exclusive pre-order phase. If I wait until autumn when the retail bulbs hit the garden centres the prime stock is already gone, and the retail bulbs will almost certainly be more expensive.

Climate Impacts Harvest: Warm, dry weather conditions across Europe severely impacts bulb harvest, meaning quantities of premium, top-size stock may well be lower than usual this year.

By managing and submitting your bulb orders this month I can secure the highest quality stock directly from premium growers before the autumn squeeze.
