Earlier this month in Helsinki, Arbonaut's Jussi Posio had the pleasure of meeting a delegation from Tanzania. During the meeting, Jussi introduced Arbonaut, with a particular focus on the African Digital and Green Transition Project with Tanzania Forest Services Agency in 2024.

The purpose of the delegation's trip to Finland was to learn about the offerings of Finnish companies in the forest sector. The delegation included representatives of the Tanzania Forest Fund, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, the Treasury Registrar Ofisi ya Msajili wa Hazina, and United Nations Development Programme - UNDP .

Big thanks to Ulkoministeriö - utrikesministeriet for inviting Arbonaut!

🌲 This week, our Helsinki team enjoyed a refreshing trip to the Nuuksion kansallispuisto - Noux nationalpark - Nuuksio National Park, blending Finnish nature, learning, and great company!

explored the inspiring exhibitions at Haltia Suomen luontokeskus - The Finnish Nature Centre, hiked scenic trails, and even got a hands-on demo of forestry basics. Key concepts like stand, sample plot, and the relascope became much clearer, which is especially valuable for our newest team members working on forest information systems and mobile apps.

Moments like this remind us how powerful it is to step outside the office: to recharge, learn in a new environment, and connect with colleagues. Big thanks to Raisa Sell for arranging such a well-balanced outing! 💚

Arbonaut and Forest Department Sarawak launching a five-year joined program on sustainable forestry in Borneo Island 🌿

The purpose of this arrangement is to transfer LiDAR technology knowledge in the forestry sector to the local government officers and support them in the digitalization of forest information.

Sarawak is the largest state of Malaysia, located on the island of Borneo. Sarawak has 62% of its landmass, or approximately 7.65 million hectares, under forest cover. Malaysia has adopted a proactive approach to sustainable forestry through its commitments under the Paris Agreement and other international frameworks, integrating conservation, community-based management, and technological innovation into its national policies.

“The collaboration with international organizations such as Arbonaut supports the implementation of our new strategies. In Sarawak, no more expansion of palm oil plantation is allowed, and we tend to support communities to manage forest in a sustainable manner, increase our carbon sinks and restore forest landscape to preserve biodiversity” tell us Datu Haji Hamden bin Haji Mohammad, the director of Forest Department Sarawak.

In addition to the contract signature with Arbonaut, Forest Department Sarawak delegation has been visiting other potential service providers and exchanging with experts of the Suomen metsäkeskus - Finlands skogscentral on the use of remote sensing to implement forest policies. The collaboration between the diverse organization is supported by Business Joensuu.

Arbonaut is taking forest modeling accuracy to the next level by combining ultra-high-resolution LiDAR data, airborne imagery, and automatically generated reference data from the field.

With our AI and machine learning capabilities, we can accurately model forests at the individual tree level, including both standing and fallen dead trees (and remotely identify biodiversity hotspots!).

🎞️ The video was filmed in Sweden during ultra-high-resolution data collection for an industrial customer.

Arbonaut osallistui 11.6 Vesistökunnostusverkoston vuosiseminaariin Turussa, missä esittelimme Pohjois-Karjalassa Höytiäisen järven alueella tehtyä Valuntako-yhteishanketta.

Yhteishankkeessa Arbonaut kaukokartoittaa 3D-analyyseillä potentiaalisten vesiensuojelurakenteiden sijainteja ja niiden vaikutusta vesitalouteen.

Kiitoksia Valuntako-hankkeen yhteistyökumppanit Kirsi Karhio (Pro Höytiäinen ry) Heini Postila (Oulun yliopisto - University of Oulu) ja Juha-Pekka Saarelainen (Watec Oy) hyvästä seminaaripäivästa ja jatkuvasta yhteistyöstä!

Tuomo Puumalainen and Yosh*to Shimizu provided an overview of Arbonaut’s technologies and our ongoing activities in Japan. We were pleased to welcome two guests from 国際教養大学/aiu (Akita International University), Mr. Kozo Watanabe and Mr. Shogo Kudo, who are visiting Finland to attend the upcoming FORMEC conference in Joensuu next week. Their visit was coordinated by Ville Kortelainen from Business Joensuu.

We had a great discussion about our digital forestry solutions and the Finnish approach to sustainable forest management. Although there are currently no projects between Akita and Arbonaut, we look forward to exploring opportunities for collaboration in both research and business. Arbonaut remains committed to keeping a close eye on developments in Japan, particularly in Akita!

🔹Did you know?🔹
Akita Prefecture, located in the northern part of Japan, is renowned for its rich natural environment. One notable example is Shirakami-Sanchi, one of the world’s largest beech forests and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, the Akita Sugi (Japanese cedar) industry is well known across Japan for its high-quality timber. Currently, a COI-NEXT project is underway in Akita, promoting the bioeconomy through industry-academia collaboration. This initiative includes cooperation with the University of Eastern Finland, further strengthening ties between our regions.

Arbonaut was at the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Innovation Day, discussing technology innovation for Rural Transformation.

Our Chief Business Development Officer Alain Minguet was participating in the panel "Data-Driven Innovation for Sustainable Development" hosted by the Ulkoministeriö - utrikesministeriet. Alain showcased how Arbonaut work has been supporting rural development and how tailored technological solutions can support rural communities in tackling the most pressing challenges.

Our Forest Policy Analyst Ana Botero was engaged in this discussion in the context of EU Deforestation Regulation. Finding solutions for millions of farmers to comply with the legal requirements was a main part of our conversations.

Thank you and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland for this fruitful Innovation Day!

We’re proud to share that the Professional Association of Forest Inventory Professionals awarded Tuomo Kauranne the Silver Relascope at their 40th Anniversary Seminar.

This recognition that was presented by the Chairman of the Association Dr. Petteri Packalen highlights outstanding contributions to the field of forest inventory through innovation and expertise. A particular merit has been the fact that Tuomo has employed more young forest inventory professionals in Arbonaut than any other organization in the industry.

Congratulations to Tuomo on this well-deserved honor! 👏

After four incredible years of research, collaboration, and innovation, Arbonaut is proud to mark the successful conclusion of the project, aimed at developing a holistic, risk-wise strategy for wildfire management across Europe.

💻 In addition to contributing to the project through technical work, data production, and reporting, our key focus was the development of the Viewer. This GIS-based platform now hosts data from five pilot sites and the EU, along with risk maps to support fire mitigation, fire management, forest management, and rescue operations planning.

🔥 Now we are approaching another forest fire season. We hope to see positive impact of the FirEUrisk project, as showcased in this video ➡️ https://youtu.be/iuH1uL6Ay_A?si=LdOzM-2fGzeQBfWF

We extend our thanks to the project leads: Prof. Domingos Xavier Viegas from Universidade de Coimbra, Emilio Chuvieco from Universidad de Alcalá, Ioannis Gitas from Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης, and Georgios Eftychidis from Center for Security Studies (KEMEA). Special thanks also to Christopher Marrs from TU Dresden and Dr Klelia Petrou from Centre of Excellence in Risk & Decision Sciences for the collaboration, support, and guidance.

The final video highlights key outcomes of this management project and includes interviews with several of its partners. This project has received f...
