Lundén Architecture Company is excited to attend this year’s Habitare, which explores the theme of “Plot Twists.” Treating space as an evolving, unpredictable narrative is an approach our interior team continually explores, most notably within our own Helsinki office in Hakaniemi.

Headquartered since 2019 in Ympyrätalo, an iconic 1968 circular landmark designed by Kaija and Heikki Sirén, our office underwent a significant expansion in 2022. To accommodate our growing team, the space doubled from 380 to 877 square metres, claiming nearly a third of the building's second floor.

Taking full advantage of the building’s distinct circular geometry, we introduced a flexible, open-plan environment designed for a collaborative architecture practice. Workstations and meeting rooms line the outer perimeter, framing sweeping views of the surrounding urban and natural landscape, including Hakaniemi Market Square and Tokoinranta Park, while support zones like the kitchen and material library face the interior covered courtyard.

Honouring the building’s 1960s architectural character, the interior features a calm, neutral palette punctuated by accent colours inspired by the copper facade and orange awnings. Prioritizing durability and ecological responsibility, the design incorporates GUT-labelled sisal carpet, wear-resistant cork flooring, recycled wool textiles, and custom Finnish solid wood and plywood furniture. A rich selection of green plants completes the design, enhancing indoor air quality and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

A major milestone for the Kupittaa Core project

Today marks an important milestone in the development of the new Kupittaa Core area in Turku. We celebrated the occasion with a cornerstone-laying ceremony with speeches by Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, the Mayor of Turku, Piia Elo, YIT President and CEO Heikki Vuorenmaa, and key stakeholders involved in the Kupittaa Core partnership project and the area.

The project will unite the Kupittaa and Itäharju districts into a lively and cohesive, urban area. At the heart of this district is the Turku Vocational Institute’s Taito Campus—a facility dedicated to the service sector, designed for approximately 3,000 students and 300 staff members.

At the core of the new development is a major infrastructure project that includes a public transport deck spanning over Helsinginkatu and the railway, a parking facility, a public deck plaza (Vipusenaukio), and a pavilion serving as a gateway to the facilities located beneath the deck.

Construction began earlier this year, and both the Taito Campus and the infrastructure project are scheduled for completion by the end of 2028. A reference plan for the 17-hectare area also paves the way for continued development and construction in the Kupittaa district in the coming years.

The Kupittaa Core project is realized through an exceptionally broad alliance. The alliance partners include the City of Turku, YIT Suomi, Lundén Architecture, and Renell Käppi Arkkitehdit, with Turku Technology and Science Park Ltd acting as the City of Turku’s representative.

The infrastructure and campus designs were developed by Lundén Architecture Company, YIT, Renell Käppi Architects and the City of Turku in collaboration with COBE, AFRY and WSP.

A new restaurant is planned for the historic water reservoir located next to Vartiovuori Observatory

The historic water reservoir on Vartiovuori Hill is undergoing a transformation. Completed in 1903 as Turku’s first water tower, the building has served many purposes over the decades, from exhibition space to storage. It is now being renewed by Lundén Architecture as a panoramic restaurant overlooking the city.

The site offers an exceptional opportunity to combine a historic building, distinctive urban landscape, and a contemporary restaurant experience. Situated at the heart of Turku’s historic urban landscape, the project supports the broader goal of opening the Observatory building and the entire Vartiovuori Hill to the public, creating a year-round living room for residents. The restaurant is expected to welcome its first customers in 2027.

The renovation of Vartiovuori Park will begin next year. Respecting the park’s natural and historic character, the project will improve facilities and infrastructure. The panoramic restaurant will complement these improvements, adding a unique attraction to the city.

Revised Espoo House plan moves forward to the City Board

A revised plan for Espoo House and its surroundings has been shared with the City Board. The project will bring Espoo’s management, administrative and support services, currently spread across the city, into a single building in Espoon keskus, reinforcing its role as the city’s administrative centre.

The updated plan preserves the 1979 Council Hall and removes the previously planned multipurpose hall, allowing the City Council to continue meeting in its current space. Although the building has been scaled down to reduce construction costs, the core idea remains: Espoo House will be open to all and serve as an active interface and meeting place for residents and decision‑makers.

Lower floors will include shared spaces, a restaurant, possible commercial premises, a resident service centre and plaza, while the upper floors will house offices for approximately 1450 employees. The timber‑framed building will feature a recycled‑aluminium façade designed for easier maintenance. Surrounding areas between the railway station and Espoo Cathedral will also be renewed with housing for nearly 600 residents and new office spaces.

After approval of the updated needs assessment, a project plan will follow, with construction scheduled to begin in 2029 and finish in 2031. For more information, please visit:
