At Riimi, architecture, interior architecture and furniture design were developed hand in hand throughout the project. In addition to the architectural design, ONE Architects was responsible for the interior architecture and furniture design, creating a cohesive environment where the building’s identity extends seamlessly into the interior spaces.

The interior design focused on clarity, durability and user comfort. Materials, colours, lighting and furnishings were carefully selected to support both the architectural concept and the everyday experience of the building’s users.

Our interior architects work across a wide range of projects, helping clients improve functionality, comfort and user experience in environments ranging from educational and workplace settings to residential and service facilities.

We’ve recently received a new series of photographs of Riimi, providing an opportunity to revisit the project’s architectural concept and material expression.

Inspired by Runosmäki’s modernist heritage, the building is composed of four interconnected volumes clad in light-fired brick and accented with warm-toned metal details.

The composition breaks down the scale of the building and establishes a dialogue with the surrounding townscape, while the church hall and 16-metre bell tower create a distinctive landmark for the neighbourhood.

The interior design of Tampere City Hall brings together the character of the original 1960s architecture with the needs of a contemporary workplace. Openness, transparency and interaction guided the design throughout the project.

A shared lobby connects the original City Hall with the new extension, bringing visitors, employees and decision-makers together. Open sightlines make the activities and decision-making taking place within the building more visible and accessible, while a continuous ceiling structure creates a visual connection between the old and new parts.

The restored City Council Chamber keeps its original 1960s character while adding modern functionality and technology. The new furnishings draw their color palette from Aarne Ervi’s original plans, while large windows bring in natural light and connect the space with the surrounding city.

Together, the interiors create a modern, flexible and welcoming environment that respects Ervi’s original vision while bringing the original building and new extension together as a contemporary whole.

The Tampere Central Office Building brings together old and new: the original Brutalist building, designed by Aarne Ervi in the 1960s with its characteristic ribbon windows, and a contemporary extension with a modern, transparent architectural expression.

The extension’s most distinctive feature is its façade of coloured glass fins. Shades of blue, yellow, purple and green, created by artist Aino Favén, give the building a dynamic appearance that changes throughout the day with the shifting sunlight and viewing angles. The colourful composition gives the extension a strong visual identity, while the glazed corner enhances openness and creates a stronger connection between the city’s administration and the people and everyday life of Tampere.

The original building was carefully renovated to preserve its architectural character while upgrading its technical performance to meet contemporary standards. Together, the original building and contemporary extension form a cohesive new whole—connecting Tampere’s architectural heritage with the present and looking towards the future.
