Echoes of Swinging Addis: The Silent Resilience of the Nerses Nalbandian House

: In the heart of Ethiopia’s capital, tucked into the historic Bashawoldiechilot around Arat Kilo neighborhood, stands a quiet, one-story residential structure that has survived both the ravages of time and the sweeping tide of modern urban redevelopment. To the casual passerby, it is a modest relic of a bygone architectural era. To historians, musicologists, and the Ethiopian-Armenian community, it is a sacred monument: the former home of Nerses Nalbandian, the maestro who forged the modern DNA of Ethiopian music.
While much of the old neighborhood has been transformed by glittering glass high-rises and wide asphalt roads, the Nerses Nalbandian Heritage House was intentionally preserved by the Addis Ababa Mayor’s Office during urban renewal programs. Today, it serves as a tangible anchor to a fascinating, century-old geopolitical alliance.

📚 The English edition of Nora, an Islamic Town in Medieval Ethiopia has arrived at the CFEE.

Edited by François-Xavier Fauvelle and Romain Mensan, the volume presents the results of the 2008 excavations at Nora, an Islamic town occupied from the late 13th to the early 16th century in present-day Ifat, Ethiopia.

Printed copies can be consulted at the CFEE library and purchased at the Centre.
