In many regions, conventional water resources, particularly groundwater and surface water, remain the primary — and sometimes the only — source of supply.

But increasing demand, prolonged droughts and decades of groundwater extraction are putting growing pressure on these resources. In some areas, aquifers are being depleted faster than they can naturally recharge.

How can we reduce this pressure while ensuring a reliable water supply?

The answer increasingly lies in combining conventional and alternative water sources:
💧 Desalination provides an additional source of freshwater, helping reduce dependence on rainfall and conventional supplies, particularly in coastal regions.
💧 Water reuse extends the life of water already within the system, reducing freshwater withdrawals and, where conditions allow, creating opportunities for managed aquifer recharge.
💧 Conventional resources remain essential, but integrating alternative sources can help reduce extraction pressure and support their long-term recovery.

The objective is not to replace one source with another, but to develop a diversified water portfolio that responds to local conditions, protects natural resources and strengthens supply resilience.

At Almar Water Solutions, we believe that long-term water security requires integrated planning, combining infrastructure, technology and tailored solutions to make better use of all available resources.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝗳 𝗮 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿?

Traditionally, wastewater treatment has focused on one essential objective: removing pollutants to ensure safe discharge or reuse.

But that perspective is evolving.

Today, wastewater is increasingly being recognized as a potential source of valuable resources. Beyond treated water, treatment processes can create opportunities to recover energy, nutrients and other materials that would otherwise be lost.

💧 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿: Treated wastewater can become a reliable resource for industrial processes, irrigation, urban non-potable applications and indirect or direct potable reuse
⚡ 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆: Biogas generated from sewage sludge can help meet a treatment facility's energy needs.
♻️ 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀: Depending on wastewater characteristics and the technologies applied, valuable compounds can be recovered and returned to productive use.

This shift is changing the role of wastewater infrastructure: from facilities designed primarily to manage waste to systems capable of recovering resources and creating additional value.

At Almar Water Solutions, we see this approach as part of a broader transition towards more integrated and circular water management, connecting water treatment, resource efficiency and environmental solutions.

The future of wastewater treatment is not only about what we remove, but also about what we can recover.

𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄.

The recent torrential rainfall and flooding in Catalonia, Spain, highlight one of the most complex challenges facing water management: how to prepare for both extreme rainfall and prolonged periods of water scarcity.

After years marked by severe drought, Catalonia is now experiencing the opposite extreme, with intense rainfall putting pressure on urban drainage systems, rivers and critical infrastructure.

These events raise an important question: Are our water systems prepared to manage both extremes?

Building water resilience requires more than responding to emergencies. It means rethinking how we plan, invest in and manage water infrastructure:

🔹 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Mobilizing capital to develop, modernize and strengthen water infrastructure capable of responding to increasingly variable climate conditions.
🔹 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Integrating climate risks, future demand and resource availability into infrastructure development and water management strategies.
🔹 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Improving the performance, reliability and adaptability of existing water assets to withstand changing operating conditions.
🔹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Moving beyond isolated solutions towards coordinated strategies that connect infrastructure, water resources and long-term supply security.
🔹 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰-𝗽𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Bringing together institutional leadership, private investment and technical expertise to accelerate the development of resilient water systems.

At Almar Water Solutions, we believe that water security must address both sides of the challenge: protecting communities and infrastructure from water-related risks while ensuring reliable access to water over the long term.

Water resilience means preparing for too much water and too little.

Our team is at the Salón del Gas Renovable in Valladolid this week, exchanging perspectives with companies and professionals across the sector.

One message is coming through clearly: the sector has many of the ingredients needed to move forward.

🔸 Technology is available, with solutions ready to be deployed.
🔸 Expertise and industrial capabilities are there, with companies prepared to develop and deliver projects
🔸 The main bottleneck is increasingly permitting and administrative processes, which are not always moving at the same pace as the industry.
🔸 Time also has an economic impact. Lengthy development processes can increase uncertainty and put additional pressure on developers, investors and companies seeking to bring projects to market.

For those of us working with industry, the takeaway is clear: 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁. 𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱.

This becomes even more relevant as water, energy and resource management become increasingly interconnected within industrial operations. Unlocking that potential will require not only innovation, but also the ability to move viable projects from planning to ex*****on.

Thank you to everyone who has shared their perspectives with our team at the event.

Not all environmental challenges require disposal. Some create opportunities for recovery, renewable energy generation and resource reuse.

Ecoprial, an Almar Water Solutions company, is a circular waste management platform in southern Chile that helps industries transform organic and industrial waste into valuable resources. Through our W2E model we secure a safe and circular model for waste disposal. The facility converts biodegradable waste streams into biogas for renewable energy generation and digestate used by nearby farmers as organic fertilizer.

Every year, Ecoprial processes more than 50,000 tons of biodegradable industrial sludge from Los Lagos region, generating approximately 1.75 million Nm³ of biogas, producing digestate returned to agricultural land, and generate carbon credits.

Founded in 2009 and incorporated into the Almar Water Solutions group through Almar Water Services Latam, Ecoprial has become a strategic platform supporting local industries in the F&B, salmon farming & municipal wastewater space, among others.

Projects like Ecoprial demonstrate how environmental infrastructure can create value while reducing waste, recovering resources, and supporting a more sustainable future.
