Sometimes you come across installations that make you wonder how they ever thought this was acceptable...
Yesterday I was at a bar in Lanzarote to lower the drain for a recently installed commercial dishwasher. The machine doesn't have a drain pump, so the drain had been installed too high for it to work properly.
While working behind the machine, I immediately noticed the electrical connection.
The dishwasher had been connected using a cut-off extension lead, with the conductors simply twisted together. No proper connectors, no junction box, no strain relief... just hoping for the best.
While I was there, the customer also asked me to take a look at the foot-operated mixer tap because it wasn't working. It didn't take long to discover why.
Both the hot and cold water inlets of the foot pedal unit had been connected to the cold water shut-off valve using T-pieces. The same cold water supply was also feeding both the hot and cold connections of the mixer tap. To make things even worse, the outlet of the foot pedal unit had simply been capped off, meaning the pedals could never control the tap.
In other words, nothing about the installation was connected the way it was designed to be.
This is exactly why the cheapest installation often becomes the most expensive one. A professional installation may take a little longer, but it prevents breakdowns, unnecessary repair costs and, most importantly, dangerous situations.
Safety isn't optional—it's essential.

A veces encuentras instalaciones que te hacen preguntarte cómo alguien pudo dejar algo así...
Ayer estuve en un bar de Lanzarote para bajar el desagüe de un lavavajillas industrial instalado recientemente. La máquina no tiene bomba de desagüe, por lo que el desagüe estaba demasiado alto para que pudiera funcionar correctamente.
Mientras trabajaba detrás del lavavajillas, enseguida me llamó la atención la conexión eléctrica.
El lavavajillas estaba conectado utilizando un cable alargador cortado, con los conductores simplemente retorcidos entre sí. Sin bornes adecuados, sin caja de conexiones y sin protección contra tirones... simplemente confiando en la suerte.
Mientras estaba allí, el cliente también me pidió que revisara el grifo con pedales porque no funcionaba. No tardé en descubrir el motivo.
Tanto la entrada de agua fría como la de agua caliente de los pedales estaban conectadas a la llave de paso de agua fría mediante piezas en T. Esa misma toma de agua fría también alimentaba las conexiones de agua fría y caliente del grifo mezclador. Y, para rematar, la salida de los pedales estaba completamente taponada, por lo que los pedales jamás podrían controlar el grifo.
En otras palabras, nada de la instalación estaba conectado como debía.
Este es un claro ejemplo de por qué lo barato muchas veces sale caro. Una instalación profesional lleva un poco más de tiempo, pero evita averías, gastos innecesarios y, sobre todo, situaciones peligrosas.
La seguridad no es una opción, es una obligación.

Gisteren was ik bij een bar op Lanzarote om de afvoer van een recent geplaatste professionele vaatwasser te verlagen. De machine heeft namelijk geen afvoerpomp, waardoor de afvoer te hoog was aangelegd om goed te kunnen functioneren.
Terwijl ik achter de machine bezig was, viel mijn oog direct op de elektrische aansluiting.
De vaatwasser was aangesloten met een afgeknipt verlengsnoer waarvan de aders simpelweg in elkaar waren gedraaid. Geen lasklemmen, geen lasdoos, geen trekontlasting... puur geluk dat er nog niets is gebeurd.
Terwijl ik daar bezig was, vroeg de klant mij ook om naar de voetbediende mengkraan te kijken, omdat deze niet werkte. Het duurde niet lang voordat de oorzaak duidelijk was.
Zowel de warm- als koudwateraansluiting van de voetpedalen waren met T-stukken aangesloten op de koudwater-hoekstopkraan. Diezelfde koudwaterleiding voedde óók de warm- én koudwateraansluiting van de gewone mengkraan. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg was, was de uitgang van de voetpedalen simpelweg afgedopt, waardoor de pedalen de kraan onmogelijk konden bedienen.
Met andere woorden: vrijwel niets aan deze installatie was aangesloten zoals het bedoeld is.
Dit is precies waarom goedkoop uiteindelijk vaak duurkoop is. Een professionele installatie kost misschien iets meer tijd, maar voorkomt storingen, onnodige reparatiekosten en vooral gevaarlijke situaties.
Veiligheid is geen optie, maar een vereiste.
