We are very happy to see Casa Tramuntana on the cover of the latest issue of Diseño Interior, with a 10-page feature dedicated to the project.

Under the title “Topografía habitada”, the article explores one of the central ideas behind the house: rather than imposing itself on the terrain, the architecture fragments and steps down with the natural slope, preserving the existing landscape and allowing the mountain to become part of the domestic experience.

A project conceived as a dialogue between architecture and landscape, where topography, vegetation and materiality become part of the same system.

Many thanks to Diseño Interior Revista Diseño Interior and Pilar Marcos for this beautiful feature and for choosing Casa Tramuntana for the cover.

Now available in the current issue of Diseño Interior.

The materiality of Casa Tramuntana is conceived as another way of extending the landscape into the architecture.

The vertical surfaces, both inside and outside, are formed by terrazzo panels made from cement and stony aggregates, developed to evoke the colour, texture and density of the rock found on site.

The panels are mechanically grooved and then fractured by hand with a hammer, transforming an industrially produced element into a rough, irregular and almost geological surface. Rather than literally imitating the existing stone, the system establishes a tactile and chromatic dialogue with it — a translation of the landscape into architecture.

Used both outside and inside, this continuous mineral surface blurs the conventional distinction between façade and interior finish, allowing the house to retain the same material language as it moves through the terrain.

A way of turning excavation into resource, and landscape into matter.

Rather than imposing itself on the terrain, Casa Tramuntana adapts to it.

Set into a steep wooded slope on the outskirts of Palma, the house retreats from the urban landscape, turning away from the city and the sea to open towards the mountain.

The programme is fragmented into five independent volumes — kitchen/dining, living room, bedrooms, studio and pool — arranged as a sequence of stepped platforms that follow the natural topography. This strategy reduces excavation, preserves the existing vegetation and allows each space to establish its own relationship with the landscape.

At the centre, the volumes frame an open patio that captures a fragment of the existing mountain, bringing the terrain into the heart of the house.

Architecture becomes less an object placed on the landscape than a system for inhabiting it.

41 rooms. Two buildings. Two completely different ways of inhabiting them.

The rooms of Terreno are deliberately not homogenised.

In the historic building, each room is organised around a horizontal line separating two worlds.

Above it, what was found: existing beams, textures and traces of the building’s history.

Below it, a new monochromatic layer in blue, orange or green extends across walls, textiles, furniture and bathrooms.

Between both, a continuous neon line drawn by Mallorcan artist Pedro Oliver Pedro Oliver stitches old and new together.

All bathrooms incorporate custom terrazzo sinks and shower trays produced by Huguet Huguet Mallorca , while a collection of minibars, wardrobes and other furniture pieces designed by OHLAB was locally produced with 2monos 2MONOS .

Across the alleyway, the rooms of the new timber building follow a completely different logic.

Here, the timber floor folds upwards to become furniture. Bathrooms become one-way mirrored boxes looking towards the balcony, while murals by Mallorcan artist Albert Pinya bring an almost pop narrative around energy, local resources and carbon.

One hotel. Two buildings. Two histories. Different ways of inhabiting.

We didn’t want to restore the past. We wanted to add another layer.

Inside Terreno’s 1935 building, traces of different periods, structural interventions and imperfections are deliberately kept visible. Rather than erasing them, the new interiors coexist with what was found.

Against this raw background, a new scenographic layer appears.

Movement is coded in red: the entrance ramp becomes a carpet, circulation becomes choreography and hospitality becomes performance.

Reception, bar and Destape —the restaurant at the heart of the ground floor— overlap to create a continuous public room rather than a sequence of isolated hotel functions.

The same approach extends to materiality. Local and minimally treated materials, circular reuse and locally produced furniture become part of the architecture itself. Demolition material reappears as recycled terrazzo, while furniture and lighting designed by OHLAB are produced alongside a network of Mallorca-based designers and makers.

A project made not only in Mallorca, but with Mallorca.

After several years of work, we’re finally sharing Terreno Barrio Hotel, a project that has been especially important to us at OHLAB.

It began with a simple ambition: to give more back to the barrio than it takes from it.

Terreno is conceived not as a tourist object imposed on El Terreno, but as an extension of the barrio itself.

The project brings together two radically different buildings: a protected 1935 building by Francesc Casas and a new seven-storey CLT timber structure.

Rather than trying to make them look alike, the architecture works through their differences.

The historic building becomes the stage, an elevated public interior for seeing and being seen.

The new building becomes the bazaar, bringing together café, coworking, gallery, gym, spa, cinema and other programmes conceived for guests and neighbours alike.

Between them, the alleyway becomes the true centre of the project: private land given back as public space, opening a new route through the site from the upper barrio towards the sea.

The new building is designed under strict Passive House criteria and is LEED Platinum certified. Its CLT structure reduces embodied carbon, natural cork is exposed on the north façade, while an automated façade of vertical timber louvers controls solar gain throughout the year.

In Terreno, what matters most is not form, but relationship.

Terreno grew from an initial vision by José Taltavull and an early dialogue with Studio Roses and OHLAB around barrio, hospitality, identity and urban life.

Terreno Barrio Hotel in Monocle.

Very happy to see the project published online and now also in print in Monocle’s July/August Quality of Life Special.

Terreno Barrio has been a fundamental project for OHLAB. One of those projects that demands an enormous collective effort, but also allows architecture to operate beyond the building itself: through the neighbourhood, its memory, its people and its future.

The article captures something central to the project: Terreno Barrio is not just a hotel, but a place rooted in its neighbourhood. A project about memory, local culture, existing buildings, material intelligence and hospitality as a way of reconnecting with the city.

It also reflects another essential aspect of the project: its deeply collaborative nature. From the very beginning with José Taltavull Taltavull.es and Rafa Roses StudioRoses , to the wider network of artists, craftspeople, designers and makers involved, Terreno Barrio has been built through many voices, skills and sensibilities.

Sustainability, circularity and responsibility have also been central to the project: from its Passive House design and targeting LEED Platinum certification, to the low-carbon CLT timber structure, cork façade, timber shading elements, reuse of materials, local production and the activation of existing urban and social resources.

For OHLAB, it has been about preserving the 1935 building, opening a public alley between the streets above and below, and creating spaces for visitors and locals alike.

Thank you MONOCLE for the feature.

When designing our new website with , we didn’t want to simply showcase our portfolio, but to make visible how we work and how we think.

Built around three perspectives — Visual, Concept and Technical — it offers different ways of engaging with each project, from a quick glance to a deeper understanding of the ideas, context and decisions behind it.

More than a website, it is a clearer way to navigate OHLAB’s work and way of seeing.
