[News] Frank Gehry’s new expansion for the Colburn School in Los Angeles is set to open on September 25, 2027. The 100,000-square-foot project will include the 1,000-seat Terri and Jerry Kohl Hall, designed as an in-the-round concert space, alongside expanded facilities for music and dance education.

The building combines transparent and opaque volumes that step with the site and are wrapped in a metallic pink finish developed specifically for the project. Inside, the main hall will feature natural light, adjustable acoustic elements and a large stage designed to host orchestra, opera, dance, jazz and other large-scale performances.

[Participants] A participant of our Job + J1 Visa Program has recently started a new professional chapter in Los Angeles after building experience in architecture and interior design in Peru. Now working at an architecture and design studio, the participant is discovering a faster-paced professional environment, with a strong focus on deadlines, coordination, and attention to detail.

Beyond adapting to a new way of working, the experience is also an opportunity to understand how architecture and interior design are approached in the U.S. Outside the office, exploring Los Angeles and discovering its historic places and architectural landmarks will become another important part of this international experience.

Architectural design is a constantly evolving discipline, where creativity and technique must combine harmoniously. Improving skills in this field involves not only mastering tools and concepts, but also developing a unique vision and an ability to solve problems in innovative ways.

In this post, we share five key tips that will help you hone your design skills, whether you are just starting your career or looking for new ways to improve your professional practice!

📚 Read books: They say there is no friend as loyal as a book. Books act as gateways to the vast world around us. Even in the field of architecture, there is no dearth of books on every topic imaginable. If you are on the lookout for a concept, books are an excellent starting point.

✏️ Sketch out your ideas: An architect is inseparable from his or her sketches. It is an integral part of an architect’s identity with many famous architects being recognized by their sketches alone.

🔎 Look into case studies: Studying from the works of those before we are one of the best ways to understand what works, when, and where. You can look up case studies of the type of concept you are searching for.

💡 Approach your idea from different angles: A design concept doesn’t need to be just about form or aesthetics. Sometimes, the concept for a structure might be based on other factors like context, climate, culture, function, etc.

🎮 Take a break, do something else: Sitting for hours and hours at your desk, brainstorming for a design concept in architecture need not always lead to success. Sometimes your brain just needs a break. At this point, you should stop working and do something else.

[News] The timber-frame structure designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects for the U.S. Pavilion at the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale is set to begin a new chapter in Arkansas. Originally created for PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity, the pavilion will be reconstructed at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville by late 2027.

Conceived as more than an exhibition object, the pavilion explored the porch as a space for gathering, exchange, and civic life. Its move from Venice to Arkansas will allow that idea to continue beyond the Biennale, giving the structure a permanent public role in a new cultural setting.

[Participants] A participant of our Job + J1 Visa Program has been rediscovering one of New York’s most inspiring routines: exploring galleries, exhibitions, and museums across the city. Beyond the artworks themselves, these visits offer a different way of observing space, light, proportion, and materiality, turning each gallery into a quieter counterpoint to the intensity of the city outside.

A recent visit to The Noguchi Museum in Queens highlighted the close relationship between art, architecture, landscape, and everyday life. With upcoming exhibitions such as Brancusi at MoMA also on the radar, these cultural experiences continue to offer new references and perspectives that extend far beyond the workplace.

👉 A successful architectural career is not something that happens overnight! You must also consider where you are going to move to pursue your career. Your choice in city can be just as important as your choice in firm!

You should not just focus your search on high job pay, but also other factors that impact your quality of life:
🔎 The standards of living, job opportunities

💡 How many firms are there? Do you only want to work at a small firm or large firm?

✅ Further licensing and education – Are there quality resources and educational opportunities there?

With this in mind, it's time to choose a city in which to develop your skills and grow as an architect. Which one are you going to choose?
