The Wychwood Wild Garden, in Shipton-under-Wychwood, traces its origins back to the early 17th century, when it formed part of the grounds of Shipton Court. By the 1860s, it was carefully designed as a Victorian “pleasure garden” — with ponds, waterways, and winding paths created for quiet enjoyment.
Over time, nature took the lead. Woodland expanded, structures softened, and what was once curated became beautifully untamed.
In 2010, the story took a remarkable turn: the garden was purchased by the local community and preserved as a shared space — a rare example of heritage protected not by institutions, but by collective care.
Today, it stands as a testament to English landscape tradition — not wild by chance, but by design.
