Two Types of Surveyor Scenery

One of our recent surveys was on a 27-year-old boat. We came across a clean engine room with no corrosion and no leaks. The boat is reliable and has maintained its value with the owner's care.

In contrast, when we open an engine room door and find oily bilges, leaking pipes and corroded fittings, we know that using the boat brings more risk, cost and spoilt plans.

A good surveyor comes with a keen eye - "look deeper, think further" is a belief holds. When we are called to an incident, we look at the obvious damage, and then think about how the whole yacht – from keel to masthead – could have been affected.

A recent job involved me heading up the mast for a rig inspection as part of a condition survey. Both an eye for detail and a head for heights are necessary!
