Hidden at the corner of Nubar and Sheikh Rihan Streets, Sabil Cherif Pasha is one of Downtown Cairo’s quiet treasures. Built in 1305 AH / 1887–1888 CE in memory of Muhammad Cherif Pasha, this small public water fountain carries a much bigger story: charity, craftsmanship, civic life, and the layered history of Cairo’s streets.
The details are easy to miss, but worth stopping for: a triangular plan, a curved street façade, carved stone, marble, a water basin, wooden shutters, and a beautiful decorative grill. Quranic inscriptions in thuluth script, muqarnas details, geometric panels, and trefoil crenellations turn this tiny structure into a powerful piece of Cairo’s architectural memory.
From October to December 2025, Mansour for Architecture and Conservation conducted a full survey of the sabil’s history, architecture, materials, and current condition.
Sometimes Cairo’s biggest stories are hidden in its smallest corners. Next time you pass by Downtown, look up, look closer, and you may find a piece of history waiting to be rediscovered.
عند تقاطع شارعي نوبار والشيخ ريحان، يقف سبيل شريف باشا كأحد كنوز وسط البلد. شُيّد في ١٣٠٥هـ / ١٨٨٧–١٨٨٨م تخليدًا لذكرى محمد شريف باشا، لكنه يحمل قصة أكبر من حجمه بكثير: صدقة جارية، وحرفة معمارية، وذاكرة مدنية تحت التغير، وحكايات من تاريخ شوارع القاهرة.
تفاصيله قد تمرّ دون أن نلاحظها، لكنها تستحق الوقوف عندها: مسقط مثلث، وواجهة مقوسة على الشارع، وحجر منحوت، ورخام، وشيشان خشبية، وشباك من مصباعات الحديد الجميل. أما النقوش القرآنية بخط الثلث، وتفاصيل المقرنصات، والشرفات ثلاثية الفصوص، تجعل من هذا المبنى الصغير قطعة من ذاكرة القاهرة المعمارية.
من أكتوبر إلى ديسمبر ٢٠٢٥، وثّق مكتب منصور للعمارة والترميم تاريخ السبيل وعماراته ومواده وحالته الراهنة.
أحيانًا، تختبئ أكبر حكايات القاهرة في أصغر زواياها. في المرة القادمة التي تمر فيها بوسط البلد، ارفع عينيك قليلًا، واقترب أكثر… فقد تجد قطعة من التاريخ تنتظر أن تُكتشف من جديد.
