What a few days it has been at Copenhagen Towers! With more than 190 participants from Nordic R&E networks, service providers, campus teams, and beyond, it was a week of knowledge sharing, new ideas, and the unmistakable spirit of community.

The programme opened with side meetings including the Joint SIG-AI and TF-EDU, Nordic Time and Frequency, Nordic Network Monitoring WG, and Nordic Trust & Identity. We then came together for two inspiring rounds of Lightning Talks, on Tuesday morning and again on Thursday afternoon, reflecting the breadth of our collective work from AI and trust frameworks to automation, cloud platforms, and education futures.

Across the week, tracks spanned network resilience, media services, AI, trust and identity, education, cloud and storage, EOSC, security, and more. Alongside the packed sessions, the informal moments—coffee breaks, lunches, the reception, and dinner—gave space for conversations, sketches of new ideas, and collaborations in the making.

💡 NCW2025 has been more than a workshop. It has been a chance to pause, reflect, and connect. Thank you to everyone who joined us at .
You are what makes this community thrive!

Earlier this spring, the Polar Connect team took part in the Arctic Science Summit Week in Boulder, USA. We contributed to shaping Arctic research priorities through sessions on cutting-edge technologies like SMART submarine cables that enable year-round environmental data collection in the high Arctic. These efforts are paving the way for sustainable, high-capacity connectivity and research access across the polar region.

🚀 Smart cables, nano-second precision & federated access: The next phase of GÉANT!

The European research & education network (GÉANT) is entering a new phase, exploring experiments involving optic cables that sense their surroundings and nano-second precision time & frequency distribution. These technologies could drive scientific discovery while also detecting tampering attempts.

🔹 “The relevance of smart cables and nano-second precision clock synchronization is obvious. Still, we must address technical, legal, and policy challenges,” says Lars Fischer, Chief Relations Officer at NORDUnet.

With strong Nordic involvement, 22 full-time employees are contributing to the project, focusing on areas aligned with national priorities.

GÉANT also advances federated access, enhancing eduGAIN and introducing myAccessID, a universal digital ID for research & education. “The recent adoption of myAccessID for EOSC and EuroHPC points towards a universal digital ID platform,” notes Fischer.

The GN5-2 phase, running for 30 months with €80M EU funding, will push research collaboration to new heights.

𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭 (𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝟮𝟯-𝗘𝗨-𝗗𝗜𝗚-𝗣𝗖𝟭) Kicked off!

🚀 On Wednesday in Stockholm, we officially started this 3-year initiative (2025–2027) with a clear focus on strengthening polar research connectivity and collaboration.

With a total budget of €7,090,000, co-funded by CEF Digital (50%), the project is driven by five beneficiaries:
Vetenskapsrådet undefinedådet (Swedish Research Council),
DTU - Technical University of Denmark,
Swedish Polar Research Secretariat,
NORDUnet,
GlobalConnect,
The hybrid meeting (in-person & Zoom) was marked by enthusiasm and a strong sense of teamwork as we discussed the timeline, grant agreement, scope, budgeting, and shared responsibilities.
Looking forward to the journey ahead and the transformative impact this project will have on polar research and connectivity! 🧊 🛳️ ❄️ 💪
