The Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea needs a post on its own. First photos from my garden yesterday. Last 2 photos same garden 12 months ago.

These are often known with the cultivar ‘Transparent’, but these vary greatly. Both in terms of genetic diversity, provenience, breeding and actual subspecies or not. Lastly soil, climate, wind, sun, shade and water effect them greatly too.
Mine vary from 50cm - almost 300cm.

I put out enough to make sure I have them until May. Some of them never break. Some break in December already. A little robe 50-70cm from the base helps a lot.

This is a Salvia discolor appreciation post strictly. And to know if there are more Black sage freaks out there?

The fragrance of these… the sugary kutikula on the stems… those black swan gothy lips with a snake’s tongue at the end… the colour of the foliage and sepals… the taste of the flower…

Rumor has it that SALVIART released a more hardy hybrid?

This is what all urban gardening and parks should look like, if you ask me.

A bunch of semi-ancient drain pipes and some industrial romanticism. Seriously Jonatan?

I can detect a rendered, generic desk-plantning from 100 meters away. Well, I’m willing to take that guess anyway, because they all look the same after all, and are all made the same way: On a computer.

What should we do then?

1. Move money away from hardscaping and fancy desks with fancy addresses and fancy people at endless meetings.

2. Fill up all public spaces with creative and inspired gardeners. Move fancy people outdoor to w**d full time at least 1 year, before making fancy decisions at desk.

3. Burn desk and draw ideas in sand. On site, while insisting on 1 + 2.

Yesterday, at Metropolis Gardens in Cph, I was joined by some of the brightest and coolest gardeners to create and re-think gardening and what an urban planting could look like.

When designing gardens, we often refer to grand, cohesive, romantic plantings. Repeated complex patterns of annuals and perennials that evoke deep, yet indefinable feelings about childhood, native or memorized landscapes.

On photos, we’ve been excited with exquisite plantings set against expansive, open spaces with rolling, naturalistic backdrops.

Such settings are very rare in Danish gardens. That’s one of the reasons why I believe, we should become better at embracing and beautifying areas that are typically reduced to practical necessities or passageways.

On the photos: my own short passageway between the driveway and the front door. Above all, this is a space that, for me, should evoke a sense of warmth, radiance and earthly connection. There should be scented plants, lightness, seasonal change and a call to stay.

Gardener’s day at Metropolis Gardens

We’ll be gardening together. And you are welcome.
We’ll be digging, scraping, twisting, building, talking, teasing, pruning, planting, sowing, nerding and most of all disturbing. It will be fun and each of you will make a difference in a BMO-sloppy-Airbnb-city, being more homogenized and predictable every day.
We’ll make something beautiful, dynamic, fun and ever changing.

Going into my fifth October here, it’s kinda obvious how I’ve designed my own garden primarily as a fall and winter show.

After coming back from the Bergamo Landscape Festival recently, it also became clear to me how Southern and Central Europe, much of England, and large parts of Germany will have to reinvent much of their urban plantings. Climate has shifted and made the use of many popular North American perennials and grasses increasingly problematic. Especially those from the east coast made popular by Piet Oudolf (NY High Line) and more.

How ever, most of Denmark has only become wetter. Here, these plants are actually perfectly suited. And the low winter sun only enhances their structural qualities.

I work with biodiversity, but I don’t lock in on natives opposed to non-natives, when designing. I think about the actual climate and conditions I am working with. What are my aggregates and how are these sites disturbed/not disturbed?

I think about complexity, because my experience here tells me - and shows us - that the more diverse and disturbed (creatively gardened!) our ecosystems become, the more we can support local biodiversity as well.

Honestly, I hadn’t expected a sold out talk. More than 100 guests on a rainy week day outside Copenhagen. For a gardener talking about mosaic gardens, landscape design, urban ecosystems, gravel and stone, plant blindness, green space democratic offline practices and a whoooole lot about plants.
So my ego likes to think you came for me. Truth is - and THIS is important, there’s a lot of people in Denmark who wants WAY more of our urban landscapes. Who wants to rethink and recreate our Danish gardens and parks, that are now greatly reduced to drained pancakes with top soil, soccer lawns, wall-like fencing, a few solitary trees (brooms really) and handicapped roses.

According to new research, the most nature on this planet is now considered ‘Novel’. Like it not. We need to rethink nature. Not restore.
Our cities matter. Land share matters. Like it or not.

A great garden is:

1. A living system you do not want to leave.
2. A dynamic gift shop with constant surprises.
3. A beautiful world made by hands, not computers.

We are into our 4th year of this lovely garden by the northern coast of Zealand. After designing the garden from scratch, we took on the entreprise and built the garden around a natural lake with runoff water from the roof. More than 100 metres of winding paths takes you through combined steppe, prairie, wetland and woodland plantings.

Last fall, we added new dry-garden layers of stones, gravel, and plants to support the mosaic principle and extend summer flowering.

MORE about the place:

The garden has been sown and planted with 60–70% endemic species. A long-lasting, steppe- and meadow-inspired landscape designed to support the full life cycle of butterflies, solitary bees, amphibians and many others.

Gardens as ecological systems and bio-corridors are still underestimated in Denmark. We are deeply convinced of their importance. For biodiversity, learning, and for creating beautiful designs that truly serve and engage visitors.

The more experience we gain, the clearer it becomes: designing and gardening are inseparable. A great garden design is a process.
