VOC Filter & PV Valves for Bitumen Storage Tanks:

Bitumen is a highly viscous, black, and sticky form of petroleum that is left over from the fractional distillation of crude oil. It is primarily used in road construction as a binder for asphalt and in waterproofing products. Bitumen is typically stored at temperatures between 140 °C and 160 °C. This range provides the ideal viscosity to keep the material liquid and pumpable without risking localized overheating or degrading the product.

Bitumen can undergo wax crystallization at low or improper storage temperatures, and its heavy, condensed vapours frequently block Pressure-Vacuum (PV) valves on storage tanks. The exact crystallization temperature varies greatly depending on the bitumen's crude source, but it generally takes place across a broad range between +80 °C and +30 °C during cooling.

Oxidation and crystallization are fundamentally different chemical and physical processes. Oxidation changes a substance's chemical composition (via electron loss), while crystallization organizes a substance into a repeating, structured physical shape.

1. The Technical solution

Our VOC Filter design is back more than 25 years, HFO and TAR, but it was very isolated from project to project, and all was filed with no further attention to the environment.

Then some 15 years ago, due to residential areas were coming closer to tank storage facilities, we were met with an increased interest globally to prevent Odor / Smell from these facilities.

Recent years we have met local EPA (Environmental Protection Agencies) with focus on emission control from storage tanks, not covered under the EU VOC Directive, as a local issue to be addressed.

Prevent VOC Emissions and Odor / Smell from Gas Stations (Service Stations) Underground Storage Tanks (VR1 & VR2).

Gas station underground storage tanks (USTs) are significant sources of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions, releasing vapours during delivery (Stage I recovery helps), refuelling (Stage II and ORVR systems), tank breathing (temperature changes), and leaks, contributing to smog and health risks like cancer (benzene).

The local EPA (Environmental Protection Agencies) to set the agenda and requirements, which often are linked to local issues as Odor / Smell or to support their industries to become environmentally friendly and businesses are being branded more positively to potential investors and customers.

This week inspections and meetings in Malta.

Luga Airport, ENEMED, Delimara Power and not least MOBC Bunkering Terminal at Spencer Hill, Grand Harbour Valetta.

Flex Blender we installed 29 years ago, all good.

VOC Filters we installed in 2012 / 2013, to re-open MOBC with EPA approval after they had closed it in 2011.

2026 re-opening of MOBC Bunker Terminal after 5-years stand-by. Major maintenance program started Sept 2025 and scheduled to end March 2026, then ready for operation as Bunker Terminal.

Next is the LR approved VOC Filters on Bunker Tankers, to prevent any Odor / Smell from loading while discharge is covered by VOC Filters installed at MOBC.

28/11/2025

FLEX LOAD - API1004 Bottom Loading Unit, designed, engineered, manufactured and installed by our team 25 years ago.

Today 2025 still fully functional and customer very satisfied.

Great to see and see some of our works back then.

26/11/2025

December 4-7, 2025 traveling to Malta for inspection of the VOC filters we installed years back.

Delimara Power Station, Jet Fuel Tanks at Luga Airport and MOBC Bunker Terminal.

26/11/2025

Today morning with DAT to Rønne / Bornholm for site inspection of 3 x 8,000 m3 Storage Tanks and meeting EPA for any clarification required for approval.

VOC Abatement Filters prevent emission and Odor / Smell from the stored products.

23/10/2025

More NEW projects coming to the table these days, thank you very much for your trust and support in our VOC technology and engineered solutions.

Pictures show some references from Power Plants in Denmark, there are many more but just to display few.

09/10/2025

New potential project is under development.

Site inspection agreed to November 26-29, 2025.

API 2000 flow calculations and we shall be in a position to propose the right solution to prevent Odor / Smell from LSFO Storage Tanks.
