Last week we celebrated the opening of the new SPAR købmand in charming little Rørvig️ ♥️

Right at the heart of town there’s now a lovely little gathering place for culture and community. Inspired by the coastal landscape and the local craftsmanship we admired on a study trip earlier this year, the square is framed by gorgeous ‘kæmpestenmure’, with planting coming soon 🪏

Completed in 2026 for KFI Erhvervsdrivende Fond. Tak for et godt samarbejde 🙌

Kirkeberg Søpark Townhouses

A new residential community is taking shape in Brøndby, transforming a former industrial site into a green and connected neighbourhood.

The 27 two-storey townhouses are arranged in three distinct rows, creating a clear architectural rhythm and a close relationship between the homes and the surrounding landscape. A lightweight timber-based construction is combined with a robust material expression, while private gardens and terraces transition naturally into shared green spaces and informal play streets.

Sedum roofs, solar panels and varied planting strengthen the green character of the development, bringing architecture and landscape together as part of one cohesive residential environment.

The project has been developed with ambitions for DGNB Gold with Heart, the Nordic Swan Ecolabel and compliance with the EU Taxonomy.

An architectural interplay between the historic and the contemporary.

Located in the former industrial area between Amagerbanen and Strandlodsvej, Holmbladsgade 136–138 forms part of the transformation of the neighbourhood into a vibrant, mixed-use and green urban environment.

Rooted in the historic structure and materiality of the site, the project continues the story of the characteristic strandlodder – the narrow plots that have shaped the local urban fabric.

The new perimeter block reinforces the street edge with façades in light-toned, hand-moulded brick. Cornices, recessed brick niches and pronounced double-height entrances create rhythm, depth and variation across the elevations. Above, a setback upper floor clad in green standing-seam metal forms a lighter crown, introducing a contemporary layer to the robust brick architecture below.

Housing and serviced apartments are brought together around a green courtyard, where architecture and landscape form a continuous whole. Varied planting, climbing greenery, terraces and preserved trees create a lush setting for everyday life while supporting biodiversity and climate adaptation.

At the heart of the courtyard, the historic blacksmith’s workshop, Smedjen, has been preserved as a cultural and architectural anchor – connecting the new development to the industrial history of the site.

Designed with the ambition of achieving DGNB Gold, the project brings together materiality, urban life, landscape and existing heritage in a cohesive architectural framework.

How do we design holistic housing with a significantly lower climate footprint — without compromising architecture, durability, or everyday life?

In Brøndby, we have completed 13 terraced houses with an area of approximately 112 m² each, where timber, straw, h**p, and eelgrass are not niche additions but driving principles. The project is part of the 4 til 1 Planet initiative — initiated by Realdania and Villum Fonden — with the ambition to substantially reduce the climate impact of construction and establish new references for future housing.

The development is built with a timber structure and biogenic insulation, targeting DGNB Gold (+Heart) and the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. Materials were selected not only for their CO₂ profile, but for their architectural and tectonic potential:

– Straw in the façades instead of mineral wool
– H**p and wood fibre insulation in floors and roof
– Timber as the primary structure rather than concrete
– Timber cladding designed to patinate gracefully in the Danish climate
– Natural ventilation with eelgrass filters as an alternative to mechanical systems

Passive design strategies have been applied consistently: roof overhangs protect façades and shield against high summer sun, western shutters reduce overheating, and a moisture strategy based on vapour control layers rather than conventional vapour barriers supports a robust and breathable envelope.

The lightweight construction required precise coordination and careful tolerance management — while enabling the structural shell to be erected in a single day.

The residence have now moved in and the experience shows that practice can shift when we are willing to rethink both materials and process.

Primary development focus: natural ventilation, passive design, foundations and ground-floor slab construction, monitoring and measurement, and target-group analysis.

Industrial character. Human scale.

Core Kirkebjerg transforms the character of a former industrial area into a contemporary residential environment shaped by materiality, landscape and community.

Organised as a classic Danish urban block, the architecture draws on a robust palette of red brickwork and red mortar. Subtle shifts in the façades, carefully articulated brick details and a clear distinction between base, middle and roof bring rhythm and depth while maintaining a cohesive architectural identity.

Towards the courtyard, large windows, balconies and private terraces create a close relationship between the homes and the shared landscape. Trees, flowering meadows and green spaces form a soft transition between private and communal life.

At the heart of the courtyard, a shared greenhouse provides a transparent, sheltered meeting place throughout the year – creating space for gardening, gathering and everyday encounters between neighbours.

Balancing industrial robustness with human-scaled refinement, Core Kirkebjerg brings architecture and landscape together to create the framework for a vibrant residential community.

Late summer shifts the pace in these beds. Tall wildflowers and herbs go to seed, and the last blooms keep insects fed before the cold season. Even a narrow strip of planting between buildings can make a real difference for biodiversity.

Have you noticed something new outside SEB Huset? 🚴

Instead of standard concrete bike plinths, we designed custom bike parking made from Danish Douglas fir. The wood stores around 5 tons of CO₂ over its lifetime - the equivalent of roughly 25,000 km of driving in an average car, or about 20 return trips to Paris. By replacing concrete with a renewable material, the project demonstrates how even small interventions can contribute to reducing the climate impact of our built environment.

Integrated steel bike racks are seamlessly incorporated into the timber elements, creating a simple and durable solution for both seating and bike parking.

Thanks to and for bringing the project to life with exceptional craftsmanship and collaboration!
