As August draws to a close, we look back upon a beautiful first summer of Norway’s NEW GOVERNMENT QUARTER in Oslo.

By introducing a coherent sequence of art-filled streets, plazas and green spaces, the project transforms what was once a disconnected governmental district into a walkable civic neighbourhood.

A defining feature of our design is the replacement of visible fortifications with integrated urban design – creating a secure yet open and inviting government quarter where a rich public life can unfold for all.

“All of the project's security measures are embedded directly within the public realm, creating protection without the sense of barriers. Now people are sitting up against the government buildings while eating their lunch – which is all the more amazing given that the very same buildings so recently were the victims of a horrendous terror attack,” says SLA Lead Designer and Associate Partner, E.C. Forfang.

The project is designed together with our friends Bjørbekk & Lindheim landskapsarkitekter, our client Statsbygg, and our design team Nordic Office of Architecture Norway, Haptic Architects, AS Scenario interiørarkitekter MNIL, I-d. Interiørarkitektur & design AS, COWI, Asplan Viak AS, Ramboll, and Aas-Jakobsen AS.

Greetings from high above the Arctic Circle, in the stunning landscape of the Lofoten Islands.

Here, SLA is helping expand the famous NORWEGIAN SCENIC ROUTES with a rethinking of the rest area at Hattneset.

Our nature-based intervention will be rooted in the landscape itself – enhancing the experience of the place and creating opportunities for closer encounters with nature, using the materials already present on site.

Our landscape architects, Aaste Gulden Sakya, Patrick Warshawski, and Helle Strandhagen, recently spent a few days there: working with 1:1 drawings, marking every tree to keep or move, watching sea eagles above the site, analyzing soil samples, and refining the design in the field.

The project is being developed in collaboration with our great client, Statens vegvesen.

Today we’re celebrating the COPENHAGEN PRIDE PARADE – one of Copenhagen’s most iconic yearly events, bringing more than 250.000 people onto the streets.

The parade celebrates love in all its forms with more than 90 different organisations from the LGBTQIA+ community, human rights organisations, Pride organisations, trade unions, political parties, companies, and others proud to show their support for LGBTQIA+ equality and human rights.

In SLA we are proud and determined to support all life. And all loves.

Happy Pride! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

Some good Friday news, involving the fastest animal on Earth:

There are peregrine falcon chicks in the nesting box at Herlev Hospital! With only 10–15 breeding pairs in Denmark, this is quite a sensation.

Back in 2014, while designing the landscape for the New Herlev Hospital, SLA proposed a nature-based alternative to bird spikes on the new buildings: Making room for birds of prey instead.

Hence, DOF BirdLife (Dansk Ornitologisk Forening) installed a falcon nesting box, high on the original hospital tower, giving peregrine falcons an undisturbed place to breed while helping keep the local pigeon population in check. A win-win solution!

And just how fast can a peregrine falcon fly, you might wonder? Up to 390 km/h (240 mph) in a dive💥

Exciting news! Yesterday, our TINGBJERG development project received the City of Copenhagen’s Architecture Prize 2026.

The award highlights the project’s careful long-term plan for densification and revitalization that meticulously knits 1,000 new homes into the existing fabric – strengthening the connection between homes and landscape, activating shared spaces, and enhancing both nature experiences, biodiversity and safety.

As lead planners and landscape architects, SLA has worked with the transformation of Tingbjerg for more than 8 years, with a strong focus on reviving Tingbjerg’s original values of community and nature while preserving the neighborhood’s unique architectural heritage.

Congratulations to the entire team: Urban Partners, Boligselskabet SAB, fsb, Københavns Kommune, and our great co-designers Tegnestuen Vandkunsten – responsible for what must be the nicest new affordable rowhouses in Copenhagen.

We’ve just published an article in LANDSKAB on LCAlandskab – Denmark’s first shared LCA tool for landscape and urban space projects.

‘Life Cycle Assessments: The Next Step for Landscape Architecture’

Today, we lack methods to systematically document both CO₂ emissions and sequestration in landscape projects. As a result, key decisions are often made without a full understanding of their climate impacts. Something we aim to change with LCAlandskab.

In the article, we reflect on the key potentials, dilemmas, and questions raised by our ongoing development of the tool:

What can increased CO₂ awareness mean for the way we design and prioritize? How do we balance different qualities when they pull in opposing directions – and avoid falling into CO₂ tunnel vision? And how do we develop a tool that genuinely strengthens everyday decision-making and moves the profession forward?

We hope subscribers of LANDSKAB will take the time to read the article, co-authored by SLA, Aalborg University – BUILD, and Aaen Engineering, who are leading the development of LCAlandskab.

The project is developed in collaboration with our great partners from Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen (IGN), Teknologisk Institut, Kildedal By P/S, AFRY Architects, and idverde, as well as a broad advisory group. LCAlandskab is supported by Realdania, Grundejernes Investeringsfond, and Dreyers Fond.

Right now, it’s just a painted line. Soon, you might need to roll up your trousers 💦

The lines mark the future stream that can reshape THE PARK AT BISPEENGEN in Copenhagen – and were drawn for a sunny citizens’ engagement event last week, sparking many good conversations and ideas.

SLA’s Senior Lead Designer Bjørn Ginman and landscape architect Sara Boudigaard Nielsen presented our first sketches for the park’s revitalization, aiming to turn the somewhat overlooked place into a welcoming, nature-rich refuge in Nørrebro.

Reintroducing the culverted stream ‘Lygte Å’ through the park responds to a long-standing local wish we hope to fulfill. The proposed course is carefully designed to protect existing mature trees while creating space for rest, play, biodiversity, and everyday nature experiences for all.

We are developing the project in close collaboration with NIRAS and our client Københavns Kommune / Områdefornyelsen Bispeengen.
