The most sustainable building is the one that lasts the longest.

As architects and designers, our focus is on preserving the original attributes and character of the building while adapting it to new functions and needs.

We've highlighted some of our transformation projects that have either been restored to their original purpose or converted to new uses.

From our modeling workshop to reality. Soon you can attend the opening of the upcoming M4 Metro line to Sydhavn - a developing neighbourhood in Copenhagen.

It will become a next level passenger experience, and Arkitema has assisted The Copenhagen Metro and Greater Copenhagen Light Rail by creating scale models of the stations as a working tool during the development of the five stations on the line,

“It was one of those models where we used all the techniques and materials available in our modeling workshop. There was 3D printing, laser cutting, electric circuits, epoxy resin... We did it all, and it has been a very inspiring process being part of,” explains Francisco Pires, Model Builder at Arkitema.

Arkitema has been designing the five stations on the line, together with Metroselskabet and as part of the COWI/SYSTRA-JV, in collaboration with architect colleagues from Gottlieb Paludan Architects.

We look forward to exploring this remarkable creation when the new metro line M4 opens on Saturday 22 June 2024!

Beplantningen vil vokse sig grøn og frodig over sommeren, inden det nye samlingspunkt i Viborg snart kan slå dørene op!

"Lysningen” skal fungere som et nyt bydelshus for lokalområdet i Overlund og vil rumme skole-, sports- og kulturfaciliteter for børn og borgere i Viborg kommune.

Særligt brugen af træ som det primære materiale tilfører karakter og identitet til “Lysningen”, samtidig med at det fremmer lys og en indbydende arkitektur.

Projektet realiseres i et team bestående af Viborg kommune , ingeniørfirmaet OJ Rådgivende Ingeniører, nu Sweco, og COWI, med Arkitema som totalrådgiver.

"Mary Elizabeth's Hospital" is designed to care for the littlest patients and their families.

Soft forms, green elements, and warmth. A building designed for children, enabling them to participate in activities, learn, and play while undergoing treatment.

Enjoy the historical surroundings in the courtyard and sculpture garden of ‘Home of Carlsberg’, in the heart of the Copenhagen neighborhood Carlsberg Byen.

‘Home of Carlsberg’ will take you back to where it all began in 1847. Arkitema has played a central part in restoring and expanding Carlsberg's official Visitor Center

The original buildings where the first Carlsberg beers were brewed have been radically transformed. They have been meticulously cleaned to reveal the original color scheme, setting the stage for an immersive and serene interactive exhibition.

With the renewal and expansion of the Carlsbergs official visitor centre, a unique piece of Danish industrial history has become publicly accessible.

Probably the most beautiful visitor centre - at least we think so.

Renderings vs. Scale Models: Discover their pivotal role in bringing designs to life.

This is our urban development project 'Stejlepladsen' in Copenhagen.

“We use several methods to convey the future features of the neighborhood: diverse housing types, materials, lush courtyard environments, etc. These are essential tools for visualizing and communicating design concepts of Stejlepladsen,” explains Dorthe Keis, Partner and Market Manager at Arkitema.

Generally, architectural models are tangible replicas of buildings or structures, while renderings are digital visualizations crafted using software.

Not two days are alike. Last week, our interns from Aarhus and Copenhagen met up in Copenhagen as part of their Arkitema College program.

"It was lovely to meet colleagues at the office and walk around the city to explore projects Arkitema has realized and has underway, especially within transformation and sustainability. I'm a bit jealous of the next interns who have the pleasure of going on the trip," explains Marco Bøgehøj, Architectural Intern at Arkitema.

From our office in Carlsberg Byen, where existing buildings have set the tone for several new additions, to exploring some of our ongoing projects and transformations around Kalvebod Brygge and Frederiksberg.

They ended the day in 'Kødbyen' by exploring how a historic meatpacking district is being transformed into an area with restaurants and bars.

We are only counting months until this new community building primarily built in timber will welcome children and staff in the Danish city of Viborg.

‘Lysningen’ is set to become a leading cultural institution interacting with the surroundings, including a school and sports facilities.

Using timber as the primary material will add character and identity to ‘Lysningen’ while contributing to the welcoming architecture for the citizens in the municipality.

In a team consisting of Viborg Municipality, engineering firm OJ Rådgivende Ingeniører, now Sweco, and COWI, responsible for the construction management, Arkitema is a full-service consultant.

From Germany to Denmark, the curiosity for learning a new design field knows no borders for our student intern, Benita von Palubitzki.

Last week, she joined our colleagues from Aarhus to explore several landscape designs in the Danish city of Aalborg, including some of our creations and designs by others.

“I am curious to learn more about climate-friendly architecture, urban planning, and the design techniques that go with it. This is my second week at Arkitema, and it is inspiring to explore designs on-site while socializing with my team,” expresses Benita.

To ensure Benita gets off to a good start and gains the hands-on experience she desires, Louise Schnell is by her side, supporting her as a mentor.

“As a student, Benita learns about the latest theories and concepts, and we help her contextualize them in real-life situations. Through dialogue, we achieve this while learning and challenging each other,” explains Louise.

Studying architecture at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar in Germany, Benita is spending a semester in Denmark where she has joined our landscape department in Aarhus.

“This is a perfect opportunity for me to decide what area of architecture and design I would like to pursue for my master's. I look forward to gaining more clarity during my internship,” Benita elaborates.

Together with Bodamer Faber Architekten BDA, we are proud of our proposal for a new school and cultural hub in Berlin!

Our architectural design of ‘Gemeinschaftsschule Insel Gartenfeld’ was awarded a shared 3rd place, and although our proposal will not be realized, we are happy to share the visualizations.

Located on Insel Gartenfeld, a site that once housed the Siemens factories, our design draws inspiration from the architecture and materials of the former industrial buildings.

Congratulations to gernot schulz architecture for their winning entry in the competition!

Rounding off the week with a great milestone! 🌿

Yesterday, our project team took the first sod for ‘Stejlepladsen P/S’, an urban development project situated in Copenhagen.

Among the speakers came Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, Lord Mayor of Copenhagen at Københavns Kommune.

In the coming years, 'Stejlepladsen' will become a greener neighbourhood, inspired by the existing Fishermen's Harbor buildings. The areas will feature a variety of housing types, materials, and architectural expressions.

Streets will be green and car-free.

The masterplan focuses on residents and visitors having easy access to various communal facilities, the waterfront, and lush courtyard environments.

This urban development is being created with PFA, & Havn, and in collaboration with URBAN POWER, Lendager Group, Kragh Berglund Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, and Artelia Danmark. Arkitema is the turnkey contractor.
