Southwest of the city center of Künzelsau, the Taläcker neighborhood is dominated by a diverse cluster of educational buildings of varying sizes. The Taläcker Elementary School, located there, is now being expanded by VON M with and through a new two-story addition.

The two wings of the existing building are connected by the wooden structure, allowing for a continuous circulation through the entire school. This approach makes it clear, both metaphorically and practically, how much the new building complements and extends the existing structure.

Flexible learning spaces with adjacent, ground-level green outdoor areas — so-called “green classrooms” — sustainable construction, and a light-filled atrium at the center reinforce the elementary school as an independent hub for the school community and an oasis of well-being for learning.

The listed four-sided farmstead is one of the cultural monuments of the municipality of Billigheim-Ingenheim, one of the oldest settlements in the Southern Palatinate. Billigheim, first mentioned in a document in 693 under the name “Bullinchheim,” features a relatively well-preserved historic appearance with an adjacent rampart system whose origins date back to the 16th century. The town’s landmark is the 40-meter-high tower of the Protestant parish church.

The four-sided courtyard, enclosed on all sides by buildings serving various purposes, is being converted into a multi-unit residence for intergenerational living. With a view over the roofs of the community, the evolved structure of the building complex is clearly evident. We are now turning our attention to one of our favorite disciplines: building within the existing structure.

It is a shade of green. The façade of the Auweg daycare center in Günzburg , constructed using vertical spruce formwork, is finished in a light aventurine green glaze. With its green tent roof, the building forms a sustainable monolith that, together with its naturally designed outdoor play areas, is seamlessly integrated into the green corridor of the State Garden Show . The green roof serves to retain rainwater. The roof is crowned by a generous skylight, into whose glazing a photovoltaic system is integrated, thereby serving as summer heat protection.

Construction work on the 1,200-square-meter timber structure is in full swing; the building’s volume is already fully discernible, and the timber construction is nearly complete, with only a few finishing touches remaining.

In our work – especially when it comes to the sustainable focus of our projects – collaboration with project partners is essential and key to us.

The executing companies play a pivotal role in this regard. Just how closely craftsmanship and innovation go hand in hand is evident in our consistently sustainably designed InnoSpace project .tuebingen , in which both the exterior envelope and the interior finishes follow a consistent principle of structural clarity and material integrity — without the use of composite materials or adhesives. Thus, the spatial organization of the building is determined by the material-appropriate construction using solid wood. Bracing levels are constructed from solid wood panels joined with dovetail joints, making the building’s structural logic immediately apparent.

The Taläcker Elementary School in Künzelsau will strengthen the existing school—through the new building—as a distinct hub for the school community and a welcoming oasis for learning. To achieve this, the new building is designed as a two-story wooden structure to complement and extend the existing layout, thereby enabling a continuous circulation path throughout the entire school.

On the pre-grayed spruce façade, which is divided by vertical pilaster strips, floor-to-ceiling windows provide lighting for the classrooms. On the ground floor, they allow direct access to the outdoor spaces designated as “green classrooms.”

Metal canopy structures protect the tiltable sections of the windows from wind and weather, ensuring a supply of fresh air regardless of the weather and without the need for technical controls. The design of the façade will play a key role in defining the identity of the site.

A few facts and figures about our project Heuneburg Keltenerlebniswelt give an idea of the scope of this endeavor, whose roots stretch far back into history — even if it cannot rival the age of the neighboring open-air museum, , with its significant finds from the Celtic period.

Commissioned by the State of Baden-Württemberg, the historic farm complex is being carefully restored and expanded. This will create new spaces that will enrich the exhibition and education about Celtic culture along the Danube. A listed residential and farm building is being renovated for future use as an office, while the former cattle barn is being converted into a museum with a restaurant and administrative offices. The complex is complemented by a new, modern half-timbered building that will house laboratories and an event space for research, exchange, and cultural activities.

Environmental protection also plays a special role in the construction measures, which are being implemented in close coordination with the authorities.

Lecture
For over ten years, Munich University of Applied Sciences has been hosting the well-established lecture series “here & there,” which aims to inspire enthusiasm for sophisticated and responsible contemporary architecture.

Now, Professors Arthur Wolfrum and Johannes Kappler have invited VON M to present our approach to built projects in a lecture. Matthias Siegert is delighted to accept this invitation and will focus his presentation on building with existing structures and timber construction, while also introducing the research building for Hof University of Applied Sciences, which is nearing completion.

On his final journey back to his homeland, the Mansfeld region, Martin Luther died in Eisleben on February 18, 1546, shortly before 3 a.m., surrounded by his sons, several Counts of Mansfeld, and friends, including Pastor Justus Jonas, the reformer from Halle, who meticulously documented Luther’s final hours: “Quote!”
“Oh Lord, Doctor Jonas, I feel so ill. The pressure around my chest is so severe. Oh, I will remain in Eisleben.”
The Museum of Luther’s Death House is the site where his death has been commemorated since the 18th century. The building, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been extensively renovated and expanded with a new wing to create a museum featuring a permanent exhibition and special exhibition spaces. “Luther’s Final Journey” thematically covers the reformer’s last days and hours in Eisleben, his approach to death, and the influence of the Reformation on the culture of dying.
