Realschule Kemnath (DE), MORE THAN A SCHOOL

We are proud to share the final shooting by Roland Halbe of one of our recent completed works, the Realschule Kemnath Realschule Kemnath - Realschule am Tor zur Oberpfalz in Germany.
The architecture and landscape project is a cooperation between ALN and Gutiérrez-delaFuente Arquitectos.

An educational campus as an urban gateway:
The project addresses a complex and multi-layered task at the intersection of urban planning, landscape, and architecture. At its core is a new secondary school for 850 students with a sports hall, forming the centrepiece of an urban development. The design explores the role of an educational campus organised along a natural green-blue infrastructure that acts as an ecological threshold.

A topographical building as an ecological interface:
The school engages with the topography to connect its two primary volumes -the school and the sports hall- with the territory. They are linked by a unifying element, the plinth. The landscape-integrated school holds significant ecological and social value, opening access to nature for all citizens. The design draws from the floodplains of the river and the existing habitats, becoming more than a building: it evolves into an ecological component that provides continuity to the landscape: an habitat for plants, insects, birds, students, teachers, neighbors, and visitors, while allowing the stream sufficient space to expand during flooding events.

A magical scenography for a “Moving School” (“Bewegte Schule”):
The classrooms of the three-storey school building are arranged around a central communication space: the atrium. This reflects an innovative pedagogical concept and the intended spatial understanding of teaching at a “Moving School.” All communal areas are designed to go beyond standard school requirements. The school’s wayfinding system establishes a continuous and fluid circulation route, with a visual echo in the rounded corners that reinforce the idea of movement.

Wir dürfen uns erneut über eine Auszeichnung für die Carlo-Mierendorff-Schule in freuen: Die Grundschule erhält einen Iconic Award 2026 des German Design Council.
Die vierzügige, inklusive Schule nach Passivhausstandard vereint Lerncluster, Ganztagsbereiche, Verwaltung und Gemeinschaftsräume unter einem Dach. Prägend für den Entwurf ist das umgebende Kiefernwäldchen.

We are delighted to celebrate another award for the Carlo Mierendorff School in Griesheim: the primary school has received an Iconic Award 2026 from the German Design Council.
Designed to the Passive House standard, the four-stream inclusive school brings together learning clusters, all-day facilities, administration, and community spaces under one roof. A defining feature of the design is the surrounding pine woodland, which shapes the character of the building and its setting.
We would like to thank the jury as well as everyone involved in the successful realization of this outstanding project.

Neues Wohnquartier an der Ayinger Straße,
An der Ayinger Straße entsteht ein zukunftsweisendes Wohnquartier mit 246 Wohneinheiten und einer integrierten Kindertagesstätte. Im Fokus stehen nachhaltige und wirtschaftlich effiziente Lösungen des sozialen Wohnungsbaus sowie neue Wohnformen, die sich flexibel an unterschiedliche Lebensphasen anpassen. Zudem stehen den Bewohnern ein Gemeinschaftsraum, ein Spielplatz für Kinder und ein Mobility Hub mit Sharing-Angeboten für Lastenräder und E-Bikes zur Verfügung.
Der städtebauliche Entwurf mit zwei gegenüberliegenden Blockrandbebauungen schafft eine lebendige Quartiersstruktur: Eine zentrale „Wohngasse“ verbindet die Innenhöfe über Durchgänge im Erdgeschoss und fördert Begegnung und Austausch.
Aktuell läuft der Rückbau der Bestandsgebäude. Im nächsten Schritt beginnt der Rohbau für ein modernes und offenes Wohnumfeld.
Das Projekt realisieren wir zusammen mit Grassinger Emrich Architekten GmbH.

New Residential Quarter on Ayinger Straße, Munich
A forward-looking residential district is taking shape on Ayinger Straße, featuring 246 housing units and an integrated daycare center. The project focuses on sustainable and cost-efficient solutions for affordable housing, as well as innovative living concepts that can adapt flexibly to different stages of life. Residents will also benefit from a community room, a children's playground, and a mobility hub offering shared cargo bikes and e-bikes.
The urban design, featuring two opposing perimeter block developments, creates a vibrant neighborhood structure. A central residential lane connects the inner courtyards through ground-floor passageways, encouraging interaction and community engagement.
The demolition of the existing buildings is currently underway. The next phase will see the start of structural construction for a modern and open residential environment.
We are carrying out this project in collaboration with Grassinger Emrich Architekten GmbH.

Über 15 Hektar Fläche erstreckt sich der Bildungscampus Riem im Osten Münchens. Das Gebäudeensemble rundet das Stadtviertel nordwestlich im baulichen Kontext ab und bildet gleichzeitig im Westen den Stadteingang.
Der moderne Bildungscampus mit einem 6-zügigen Gymnasium und einer 5-zügigen Realschule beherbergt circa 2400 Schülerinnen und Schüler. Neben den beiden Schulen mit zwei Dreifachsporthallen und zwei schulischen Schwimmbädern befinden sich in dem Komplex die zentrale Volkshochschule und ein attraktiver Sportpark. Verschiedene Teilbereiche wie der Pausenhof oder die Mensa werden von beiden Schulen genutzt und bieten einen schulübergreifenden Austausch. Weiter stehen die Sportanlagen sowohl für den Schulbetrieb als auch für den Breitensport zur Verfügung.
Gute fünf Jahre lang haben wir die Leistungsphasen 6–9 dieses Großprojekts begleitet. Entwurf und Planung stammen von h4a Gessert + Randecker Generalplaner GmbH.

Spanning more than 15 hectares, the Educational Campus Riem is located in the eastern part of Munich. The building ensemble completes the urban fabric of the district to the northwest while simultaneously serving as a western gateway to the neighborhood.
The modern educational campus comprises a six-form-entry academic secondary school (Gymnasium) and a five-form-entry secondary school (Realschule), accommodating approximately 2,400 students. In addition to the two schools, the complex includes two triple sports halls, two school swimming pools, the central adult education center (Volkshochschule), and an attractive sports park.
Several facilities, such as the schoolyard and cafeteria, are shared by both schools, encouraging interaction and exchange across the school communities. The sports facilities are also available for both school activities and community sports programs.
We supported work stages 6–9 of this major project for more than five years. The design and planning were carried out by h4a Gessert + Randecker Generalplaner GmbH.

Der Bildungscampus Riem im Osten Münchens bietet zahlreiche Sportmöglichkeiten: ein Schwimmbad mit zwei Becken, zwei Dreifachsporthallen, Fußballfelder, Leichtathletikanlagen und Volleyballfelder. Davon profitieren nicht nur die rund 2400 Schülerinnen und Schüler des Gymnasiums und der Realschule, sondern auch viele lokale Vereine. Denn nach Schulschluss stehen die Anlagen auch diesen zur Verfügung. Damit ist der Campus nicht nur ein zentraler Baustein im Bildungsangebot des Stadtteils Trudering-Riem, sondern auch des Zusammenlebens.
Über fünf Jahre lang haben wir die Leistungsphasen 6–9 dieses Großprojekts begleitet. Entwurf und Planung stammen von h4a Gessert + Randecker Generalplaner GmbH.

The Bildungscampus Riem in the eastern part of Munich offers a wide range of sports facilities, including a swimming pool with two pools, two triple sports halls, football pitches, athletics facilities and volleyball courts. These amenities benefit not only the approximately 2,400 students of the secondary school and grammar school, but also numerous local sports clubs. After school hours, the facilities are made available to them as well. This makes the campus not only a key pillar of the educational infrastructure in the Trudering-Riem district, but also an important contributor to community life.
For more than five years, we supported phases 6–9 of this large-scale project. The design and planning were carried out by h4a Gessert + Randecker Generalplaner GmbH.

Neuer Raum für Förderung, Entwicklung und Begegnung in Schwandorf.
Für die Lebenshilfe Amberg-Sulzbach planen wir einen Neubau samt Freianlangen, der die Frühförderstelle, die Schulvorbereitende Einrichtung sowie die Heilpädagogische Tagesstätte unter einem Dach vereint.
Das Gebäudeensemble gliedert sich in drei klar ablesbare Baukörper: Kopfbau, Mittelbau und Langbau. Durch die Teilung des Bauvolumens und das gezielte Abknicken des Kopfbaus entsteht eine markante Gebäudefigur, die den Mittelbau als Herzstück betont. Hier befindet sich der zentrale Eingang, der Besucherinnen und Besucher empfängt und die verschiedenen Bereiche miteinander verbindet.
Mit dem Neubau entsteht ein Ort, der kurze Wege, klare Orientierung und eine unterstützende Umgebung für Kinder, Familien und Mitarbeitende schafft.

New space for support, development and connection in Schwandorf.
We are designing a new building and its surrounding outdoor facilities for Lebenshilfe Amberg-Sulzbach that brings together the Early Intervention Center, the School Preparation Facility, and the Therapeutic Day Care Center under one roof.
The building ensemble is composed of three clearly defined volumes: a head building, central building, and linear wing. By dividing the overall volume and strategically angling the head building, a distinctive architectural form emerges that highlights the central building as the heart of the complex. This is where the main entrance welcomes visitors and connects all functional areas.
The new facility creates a place that promotes short distances, intuitive orientation, and a supportive environment for children, families, and staff.
