25 Years of the Christ Pavilion

Twenty-five years ago – on August 18, 2001 – the Christ Pavilion was inaugurated at Volkenroda Monastery in Thuringia. The design, however, was originally conceived for a very different context: in 1997, gmp won the competition for the shared sacred space of the Catholic and Protestant churches at EXPO 2000 in Hannover.

From the outset, the pavilion was conceived as a temporary and fully demountable structure. Measuring 24 × 24 meters and rising 18 meters high, the building is crowned by skylights integrated into the heads of the steel columns, directing daylight into the interior. The outer envelope combines glass panels with translucent marble. A double-glazed cloister encloses the central pavilion. Integrated display cases between the facade layers showcase materials from nature and technology – from wood discs and feathers to gears and tubes.

After the world exhibition ended, the steel-and-glass structure was dismantled, transported to Thuringia, and reconstructed in Volkenroda – adapted to the local conditions and without the crypt, colonnade, and glazed cross tower.

How can former port and industrial sites become places for people again?

Transforming former port and industrial sites offers an opportunity to reconnect the city with its waterfront. This idea lies at the heart of our design for a 2-kilometer-long promenade along the western bank of the Huangpu River in Shanghai.

As part of a master plan for the transformation of former port and industrial areas along the river, the promenade is designed as a new public space that brings people closer to the water while meeting the necessary flood protection requirements.
Located below the flood protection level, the promenade allows for direct contact with the water and preserves existing visual connections to the river. At the same time, a flood barrier provides the necessary protection, with wide flood gates at several points. Under normal conditions, these gates remain open and are closed only in the event of flooding.

The result is a public waterfront space that makes proximity to the river an integral part of the urban experience. The promenade’s gently undulating layout also gives the waterfront a distinctive spatial character.

Back where the story began: To celebrate this year's summer party, hundreds of gmp colleagues returned to the former Berlin Tegel Airport. For many, it was their first visit since the closure of the legendary airport.
Tegel was chosen for a special reason: the party also marked gmp’s 60th anniversary. In 1965, Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg and Klaus Nickels won the competition for the new airport with their young team. Commissioned shortly afterward and opened in 1974, Berlin Tegel went on to become one of Germany’s most iconic airport buildings.
For many of us, the celebration was also a rare opportunity to experience the airport from a new perspective. Starting at the former noise protection hangar, we crossed the airfield to the maintenance hangar. The evening continued with music, conversations, and a spectacular sunset.
Not far away, the terminal building with its exposed concrete structure stood quietly in the background, as if waiting for its next chapter to begin.

A new media and office ensemble for Ningbo!

Completed in 2023, the Ningbo Broadcast & Television Group complex brings together television studios, a newsroom, and administrative offices within a clear architectural order.

Prominently located along the Yong River, the 125,000-square-meter development comprises three distinct building volumes elevated on a shared seven-meter-high podium. Elevating the buildings on this common base enhances their visibility from both the bridge and the opposite riverbank. Broad steps on the northern side open to the waterfront promenade and green spaces, guiding visitors into the ensemble while integrating it into the surrounding urban landscape.

With the television studios to the east, the office building to the southwest, and the newsroom to the northwest, all three volumes are connected at podium level, creating a continuous spatial sequence. The podium is extensively paved in light-colored granite, while the facades of the studio and office buildings are defined by vertical aluminum fins. Viewed from different angles, the fins create a dynamic, wave-like pattern, evoking Ningbo’s maritime identity, which is associated with the expression “When the sea is calm, the waves are at peace.”

As the 2026 enters its final phase, we’re looking ahead to what’s next. The FIFA World Cup 2030 will be hosted across Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, with the final set to take place at one of football’s most iconic venues: the in Madrid.

Home to since 1947, the stadium has evolved continuously throughout the decades. Most recently, it underwent a comprehensive transformation. Developed in collaboration with and , the renovation converted the Bernabéu from a football venue into a contemporary multipurpose arena. While a significant proportion of the existing structure was preserved, a new envelope of curved stainless-steel louvers unifies the stadium's previously fragmented architecture, giving it a distinctive new identity within Madrid’s urban landscape.

Yet the most significant changes are found behind the facade. Modern stadiums are no longer designed solely for football. This transformation also strengthens their role as public destination. New restaurants including a microbrewery, retail spaces, and the Real Madrid Museum attract visitors beyond matchdays. Meanwhile the Skywalk opens the stadium to the public, offering new perspectives on both the venue and the city. New public spaces surrounding the stadium improve accessibility and create pedestrian-friendly areas that connect the building to the cityscape.

The renewed Bernabéu reflects a broader shift in stadium architecture: Today’s sports venues are no longer isolated event structures. They are becoming year-round destinations, and places of collective identity.

40 Years of gmp Aachen

Forty years ago, our office at Rennbahn 5–7 in Aachen was established. What started as a small group has grown into a team with around 50 colleagues who have worked on nearly every type of projects undertaken by an international architectural practice, from trade exhibition buildings and major sports venues to complex healthcare facilities and landmark office buildings.

▪️ The First Milestone
A major competition success for the Aachen team came with the design of the New Leipzig Trade Fair. The project was gmp’s first commission in eastern Germany following German reunification.

▪️ Stadiums and Arenas
Whether for FIFA World Cups, UEFA European Championships and other international sporting events, numerous stadiums have been developed by the Aachen office. These include the RheinEnergie Stadium in Cologne for the 2006 World Cup, stadiums for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, and the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. More sports venue projects include facilities in Bucharest (Romania), Foshan (China), Saarbrücken (Germany), and Luxembourg.

▪️ Healthcare Facilities
With the Cardiac Center of University Hospital of Cologne, hospital and laboratory buildings became another key focus area for the Aachen team 25 years ago. In 2025, the Hôpital des Enfants (CHUV) in Switzerland was completed. The Hôpital du Valais in Switzerland and Ortenau Clinical Center Achern, Germany, and CEFAM - Center for Family Health of University Hospital Cologne are currently under construction.

▪️ Workplaces
Office buildings are also an important part of the Aachen team’s portfolio. Examples include the corporate headquarters of Trianel in Aachen and the recently opened Deichmann Campus in Essen.

Together with , gmp is realizing a six-track comprehensive school in 's Heckinghausen district as part of their school construction initiative.

An innovative spatial concept replaces closed classrooms with open “learning landscapes” as teaching methods have shifted away from the traditional lecture-style. Problem-based and independent learning in groups or individually promotes learning success in diverse learning groups. The cafeteria with a kitchen and an auditorium double as multifunctional gathering spaces.
The new school is located on a historic industrial site and will be built using a hybrid construction method. The historic main building of the former metal goods factory will be preserved and integrated into the complex. Building materials recovered during demolition, particularly the bricks used in the existing buildings, will be reused in the new construction and renovation.

This project sends a clear signal for future-oriented construction, combining educational requirements, urban design quality, and ecological responsibility.

Our design for the KĀL AVADHĀRĀ Museum & Planetarium in Somnath, India, has won the 2nd Prize in the international design competition.

The proposal envisions an expansive cultural and knowledge campus that brings together exhibits on the philosophy and measurement of time, astronomy, and mythology within a unique spatial experience.

Inspired by the Indian understanding of time, the design conceives time not as a linear sequence, but as a cycle. Its conceptual foundation is the Vedic notion of the Mahāyuga—the eternal cycle of creation, order, chaos, and renewal. This idea is translated into a spatial narrative in which visitors move through the campus along spiral and circular paths rather than following a linear route. The museum is conceived not as a standalone building, but as part of an ensemble comprising water, landscape, public open spaces, and a 1,500-seat planetarium.

Model Matrix Community in Zhangjiang Science City: A mixed-use urban district centered on technology and innovation industries, integrating offices, cultural facilities, apartments, and retail functions.

Three office towers, rising to heights of 150 meters, 110 meters, and 73 meters respectively, establish a visual relationship through their facade design. Each tower incorporates double- to triple-height “sun halls” that serve as shared communication spaces within the vertical office environment.

The podium buildings follow a “stacked box” design strategy. Their horizontally extended low-rise volumes, characterized by large, glazed openings, create an urban scale that relates to the surrounding public realm. In addition to retail and dining functions, the podiums accommodate open and shared office spaces for young entrepreneurs and start-ups.

The two residential buildings are arranged in offset configuration, allowing a greater number of apartments to benefit from views toward the wetland park. Following the “live-and-work nearby” concept, the apartments are primarily intended for young researchers and professionals working in Zhangjiang Science City.

The Shanghai Jiushi Art Museum has relocated to its new exhibition spaces on the first and second floors of the historic Asia Building on the Bund.

Guided by the principle of “Continuity, not Replacement,” we reopened the long-sealed windows to reconnect the interior with the Bund’s iconic skyline and views of the Huangpu River. The historic window frames were carefully preserved in their original condition.

Classic parquet flooring was reinstated, echoing the character of historic buildings along the Bund. The design also maximizes the preservation of the original ceiling system, minimizing unnecessary interventions and material waste.

The new arrival area on the second floor integrates ticketing, cloakroom, and information into a clear and efficient sequence.
