For the eighth time, local specialists have initiated a carbon inventory in Kibale National Park, Uganda, using the latest version of Field-Map.com technology.

The monitoring is based on permanent sample plots established more than two decades ago. Field-Map facilitates field operations by enabling precise tree positioning, digital recording of measurements, and direct linkage between field data and spatial information. The system accelerates data collection while maintaining high consistency and quality standards.

It has now been 23 years since the first inventory campaign. The 2023 assessment of the restored forests, supported by the Dutch organization FaceTheFuture.com, showed more than 70 tonnes of carbon per hectare stored in living biomass. The current remeasurement will provide updated figures and enable continued monitoring of long-term carbon dynamics.

This long-term effort demonstrates how sustained forest restoration combined with precise inventory technology delivers measurable results.

The new TruPulse 360i is finally here. Compared to the previous version, it offers increased resistance to water and dust (IP67). The new Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) communication is more stable and energy-efficient, while classic Bluetooth remains available for compatibility with older tablets. The lower magnification (5×) proves useful especially when measuring tree heights, as it offers better visual context of the canopy in the viewfinder. The return to standard AA batteries is also a welcome change.
On the downside, there is no longer a standalone tilt and azimuth mode—when measuring the top of a tree, users will need to remove the foliage filter to get a return from the highest branch. The minimum measurement distance of 0.5 m may also cause some inconvenience when mapping on inventory plots. Nevertheless, the device appears to be very well built, and we believe it will perform well under field conditions. Full integration and support in Field-Map is available from version 22 onward.

After 12 years, Field-Map returned to Sabah, where 76 plots were measured as part of the INFAPRO project in collaboration with Face the Future. During this period, the Field-Map technology has shrunk, the weight has decreased significantly, but the difficult terrain conditions have remained. Despite lower protection of devices against water and dust, everything worked very well. The dynamics of forest development in this area are incredibly fast. Many large pioneer trees have completely disappeared and have been replaced by new one.

As a part of the annual meeting of Ing-Forest (www.ing-forest.cz), the second user meeting of the Field-Map CZETAX application took place in the pleasant environment of the Vysocina Region. We are very pleased to see that the number of forest management plans created by the Field-Map CZETAX application is growing rapidly. Next year, 25% of the Czech forest area will be covered by Field-Map CZETAX (area of new forest management plans).
