Τα συστήματα DX (Άμεσης Εκτόνωσης) χρησιμοποιούν μια βαλβίδα άμεσης εκτόνωσης για τον έλεγχο της ροής του ψυκτικού μέσου σε έναν εξατμιστή, όπου εξατμίζεται για να απορροφήσει θερμότητα, ενώ τα συστήματα υπερτροφοδότησης χρησιμοποιούν μια αντλία για την κυκλοφορία ψυκτικού υγρού στον εξατμιστή. Τα συστήματα υπερτροφοδότησης προσφέρουν υψηλή απόδοση μέσω καλύτερης μεταφοράς θερμότητας του εξατμιστή (καθώς το υγρό ωθείται συνεχώς), είναι καλύτερα για μεγάλες βιομηχανικές εφαρμογές.
Οι εξατμιστές ξηρής εκτόνωσης και οι πλημμυρισμένοι εξατμιστές διαφέρουν κυρίως στον τρόπο κυκλοφορίας του ψυκτικού μέσου: οι εξατμιστές ξηρής εκτόνωσης έχουν ψυκτικό μέσο που εξατμίζεται πλήρως μέσα στους σωλήνες, ενώ οι πλημμυρισμένοι εξατμιστές διατηρούν την επιφάνεια των σωλήνων συνεχώς βρεγμένη. Οι πλημμυρισμένοι εξατμιστές είναι πιο αποδοτικοί λόγω της ψηλότερης μεταφοράς θερμότητας.
