Shelter staff have the unenviable task of trying to describe dogs to prospective adopters in a way that promotes them positively yet honestly. The problem with this is that every dog trying to get by in a shelter environment is likely to be stressed. Some dogs adapt quickly, others shutdown and hide for the duration of their stay. Dogs change once adopted; they start to trust again, find their old selves again and are miles away from the dog you might see at the shelter. It takes a good six months for a dog to settle properly into a new home, so think carefully about each individual and what you can offer them, how you might meet their needs and how that dog will develop when they feel truly at home.
