[Re]connect with Akamas | 12-18 September 2025

🌿 J&G Engineering & Architecture Ltd, part of the project team, carried out a series of outreach and field activities in Cyprus in September, strengthening collaboration between research, local communities, and educational institutions in the Akamas region.

🤝 During the visit, the team met with Rebecca Bang Jensen, Master’s student from the Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen, exchanging insights on landscape policies and research practices in Cyprus, Denmark, and Europe. Life Cycle Assessment ( ) methods and practices were presented in relation to landscape evaluation and sustainable planning.

🌍 Field visits took place in the Akamas protected area and surrounding villages, where the team engaged with local residents and tourists, introducing the TOPIO project and encouraging participation in the upcoming questionnaires.

🎓 As part of the engagement actions, the team visited the Cyprus University of Technology, presenting the TOPIO project to the academic community and discussing environmental challenges in the Akamas region and project objectives with the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management and Mr. Theocharous. Also visited The International School Of Paphos, an institution actively promoting environmental education and awareness, where students regularly explore Akamas and learn about the importance of protected areas, forests, and biodiversity conservation. The TOPIO project was introduced to the school’s principal, Mr. Artemis, strengthening links between education and landscape stewardship.

🌱 These activities reinforced TOPIO’s mission to combine scientific research, community engagement, and education in support of resilient and sustainable landscapes.

🗺️Known for its unique Mediterranean ecosystems, Akamas is home to rare flora and fauna, coastal habitats, and cultural landscapes shaped by centuries of human presence. Its rich biodiversity and ecological significance make it one of the most emblematic Natura 2000 sites on the island.
🌿 As part of , Akamas serves as a living laboratory for studying how landscapes evolve, how communities interact with them, and how sustainable management can protect their future.
📍 The region faces growing pressures from tourism, development, and climate change. By engaging scientists, local communities, and decision-makers, TOPIO seeks to define Landscape Quality Objectives that balance conservation with sustainable development.
🤝 Through this case study, we aim to strengthen ecological resilience, safeguard cultural identity, and promote a shared vision for a sustainable Akamas, where nature and people thrive together.

🌺 The team of TOPIO participated in the 5th Mediterranean Plant Conservation Week, held in April in Limassol, Cyprus 🇨🇾. This prominent international event brings together plant conservation professionals and enthusiasts from across the Mediterranean basin exchange knowledge and inspire joint actions for the protection of wild plants and their habitats.

📝 was featured in the session “Participation of civil society in conservation projects,” where the Italian Case study Monte Cairo Massif was presented (Sapienza Università di Roma). Monte Cairo Massif is a Natura 2000 site that has experienced extensive ecological degradation due to past human activity, including war-related impacts and ecologically mismatched reforestation.

Our team shared how we integrate:

🛰️ methods for territorial assessment based on geospatial technologies
🧑‍🤝‍🧑 and active community engagement,to establish landscape quality objectives and support long-term, context-sensitive transformation.

🎤 In addition, the conference also featured an oral presentation by J&G Engineering & Architecture Ltd, titled: "TOPIO project: Enhancing environmental awareness in the Akamas Peninsula".

🤝 Our participation was a valuable opportunity to share our approach, which combines the application of methods for territorial assessment based on geospatial technologies and the active community engagement, to define landscape quality objectives and guide its transformation and evolution over time.
