Anele by Studio PADA

Located in the heart of Deryneia, the project consists of a 1990s house with generous yet highly segregated spaces; a common example of local residential architecture at the time. The clients, however, called for the separation of the existing structure into 2 stand-alone residences with open-plan floors brought up to the standard of today's living. Regardless of their separate ownerhsip, the two residences share several architectural features in a complimentary fashion to create a cohesive appearance. A stone-clad surface on one level is a loadbearing element for the other, whereas a daring cantilevered balcony for the top floor offers much needed shade for the bottom one.

Set against the backdrop of a traditional village roofscape, large openings extend the eye above and beyond to the surrounding context, serving as the ideal vantage point from which to observe the world go by. An expansive rooflight carved out of the mass permits the display of playful shadows cast by overhead clouds, intensifying an awareness of the outdoors.

The architecture of the dwelling takes up the character of the place, as it is inspired by the tranquil rhythm of a life lived with simplicity. The interiors are calming in nature, expressed through a minimal palette of colours and materials to ensure a visually cohesive composition.

The first floor residence greets you with a bold, double-height atrium. The elegant lines of the black steel treads clad in walnut create an undertone of sophistication, while the large openings, perched at high level, flood the space with natural light. Retaining dark, earthly accents close to the ground amidst the white-washed walls at higher levels constitutes a deliberate gesture, enticing you to ascend to the upper floor for further exploration.

A concept that resonates balance and serenity. The main living quarters are defined by a back wall whose presence plays a fundamentally important role in establishing privacy and seclusion. Across from this, expansive openings create a great sense of openness and invite an abundance of natural light to flow through and highlight the textures of the curated materials.
