As an architect, I've always believed that the quality of a building lies in the details. This belief is encapsulated in the phrase "God is in the details," which is often attributed to the famous architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. While the phrase has been interpreted in many different ways, I believe that it speaks to the importance of paying close attention to every aspect of a building, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant and the building technology that’s involved therein.
The details of a building are what give it character, personality, and soul. They are the subtle design choices that can make a space feel cozy or grand, warm or sterile, inviting or intimidating. In some cases, details can even be functional elements that enhance the user experience or improve the performance of the building.
For example, the way that light enters a space can be a powerful detail that influences how we perceive and interact with a building. The angle, intensity, and color of light can all be carefully designed to create a specific mood or ambiance. Similarly, the choice of materials, textures, and finishes can create a sense of comfort or luxury, or contribute to the durability and longevity of a building.
But the importance of details goes beyond just aesthetics and function. Every detail of a building has the potential to tell a story or convey a message. From the shape of a door handle to the color of a tile, every element can be a reflection of the values and ideals of the designer and the people who use the building.
Of course, paying attention to the details is no easy feat. It requires a deep understanding of design principles, an appreciation for the craft of building, and a willingness to invest the time and resources necessary to get everything just right. But for those who are willing to put in the effort, the results can be truly remarkable.
As an architect, I believe that the details are what make a building great. They are what separate the ordinary from the truly exceptional and portray a wider experience in building components and how they are assembled. By approaching each detail with care, attention, and passion, we can create spaces that inspire, delight, and speak to the very essence of what it means to be human. similarly "God is in the details" is not just a saying, but a way of life for those who are committed to creating beautiful, meaningful, and enduring architecture.
