A little piece of history just behind Aspens Mountain Spa…💜

Only around 9 minutes’ drive from Aspens Mountain Spa, hidden amongst the pine forests of the Karaağaç Mountains (Alevkaya mountain range), you’ll find the remarkable Sourp Magar Armenian Monastery, also known as Magaravank.

The monastery’s history stretches back more than 1,000 years. Originally established around 1000 AD as a Coptic Christian monastery dedicated to Saint Macarius of Alexandria, it later passed into the hands of the Armenian community and became an important religious and cultural centre.

For centuries, Sourp Magar welcomed pilgrims and travellers and became an important retreat for the Armenian community in Cyprus. Its secluded mountain setting, surrounded by forest with wonderful views towards the Mediterranean, makes it easy to understand why this location was chosen.

Today, the monastery stands largely in ruins, but its old stone walls, arches and courtyards still give a fascinating glimpse into its past.

And a little advice if you decide to visit — once you park the car, prepare yourself for a good walk down to the monastery! It takes a little effort, but the scenery, history and atmosphere make it well worth it.

Another fascinating piece of Cyprus history, tucked away in the Karaağaç Mountains, almost on the doorstep of Aspens Mountain Spa.

ASPENS MOUNTAIN SPA – OPEN DAY

This Friday, 14th August 2026, we’re opening the doors at Aspens Mountain Spa between 10am and 4pm. Come and join us for a relaxed afternoon, enjoy a drink and a kebab 🐐, take a walk around our completed show apartments, and see for yourself how the Aspens is taking shape.

We’ll also be sharing more about what’s coming over the next 12 months, including the continued development of Aspens Mountain Spa and a first look at Aspens Vitalis — the next chapter of our vision for Karaağaç.
