The 140 Social Housing Project is an award-winning example of how collective housing can be designed around the people who live there.

Rather than simply creating individual units, the project brings residents together around shared spaces, natural light, greenery and a central courtyard — creating opportunities for connection and a stronger sense of community.

César Freitas, Founder of César Freitas Arquitetos, took part in the 1st Symposium des Architectes Africains in Dakar, Senegal, bringing together architects and professionals from across the continent to exchange ideas, experiences and perspectives on the future of African architecture.

For us, these moments are about more than networking. They are an opportunity to:

• Share knowledge and experiences across African contexts
• Discuss the challenges shaping our cities and communities
• Learn from different approaches to architecture and urban development
• Strengthen connections between professionals across the continent
• Contribute to a more collaborative vision for Africa’s built environment

What happens when a house turns away from the street and opens itself inward?

For this project, privacy became an architectural opportunity — creating a protected interior world organized around light, water and landscape.

— A central patio becomes the heart of the home
— Concrete walls create protection and depth
— Large openings connect living spaces to the outdoors
— White volumes contrast with the weight of exposed concrete
— Vegetation softens the architecture and brings life into the composition

A house designed not simply to occupy a site, but to create its own atmosphere within it.
