🔋 Can an older battery system access the Gobel VRM platform simply by adding one new BMS?

Recently, a customer asked us an important question.

He already has four older Gobel Power battery packs using RN150 BMS units. His idea was:

❓ Add one new battery pack with an RN200 BMS
❓ Use the new pack as the master battery
❓ Keep the four RN150 batteries as slave units
❓ Connect a WiFi module to monitor all five batteries through Gobel VRM

It sounds reasonable—but BMS communication and VRM compatibility are not exactly the same thing.

The RN200 and RN150 BMS units can communicate with each other in a battery system.

However, a mixed RN200 + RN150 system cannot use the WiFi module to upload complete system data to the Gobel VRM platform.

Why?

Because VRM monitoring depends on more than basic communication between batteries. The BMS protocol, firmware, data structure and WiFi interface must all support the same monitoring system.

The customer then asked another question:

“Can I replace the old RN150 BMS units with the newer PC BMS?”

In this case, we checked the battery version, serial number and enclosure structure with our technical team.

Unfortunately, the PC BMS and its corresponding front panel could not be installed in these older battery enclosures because the mounting-hole positions differed by approximately 1 mm.

Even a very small mechanical difference can affect:

🔧 BMS installation
🔌 Front-panel alignment
📡 WiFi module connection
💻 Firmware and protocol compatibility
🔋 Communication between parallel batteries

So, before upgrading an older battery system, we recommend checking:

🔍 Original battery model and serial number
📅 Purchase date and production version
⚙️ Existing BMS model
🔄 Master–slave communication protocol
📡 WiFi and VRM compatibility
📐 Front-panel and mounting-hole dimensions
🧩 Firmware compatibility across all batteries

Think of it this way:

BMS communication → Batteries can exchange basic data
WiFi compatibility → Data can be transmitted online
VRM compatibility → The complete system can be correctly recognized and monitored
Mechanical compatibility → The new hardware can be safely installed

One compatible connection does not mean the entire upgrade will work.

Before purchasing a new BMS, WiFi module or front panel for an older battery, please send us the product label, serial number and clear photos of the existing BMS and front panel.

We will check the complete system first—because sometimes a 1 mm difference or one incompatible protocol can change the whole solution.

**Europe Has Plenty of Solar. Now the Grid Is Becoming the Bottleneck. ⚡**

For years, Europe’s energy transition had one clear goal:

**Install more renewable energy.**

More rooftop solar.
More solar farms.
More wind power.

And it worked.

But now another problem is becoming increasingly obvious:

**Generating electricity is getting easier. Moving and using it at the right time is becoming harder.**

On a sunny afternoon, thousands of solar systems can generate electricity at the same time.

But what happens when local consumption is low and the grid is already full?

The electricity has nowhere useful to go.

Then a few hours later, the sun goes down, people return home, EVs start charging, heat pumps switch on — and demand rises again.

This is why I think the next stage of the energy transition will be very different from the last one.

It is no longer simply:

**“How can we generate more renewable electricity?”**

The bigger question is becoming:

**“How can we manage renewable electricity better?”**

And this is exactly where battery storage becomes much more important. 🔋

A battery does more than store excess solar energy.

It can help:

✅ Store solar production instead of exporting everything immediately
✅ Shift energy from daytime to evening
✅ Reduce peak demand from the grid
✅ Increase solar self-consumption
✅ Give homes and businesses more flexibility

For installers, this also changes the conversation with customers.

A few years ago, the discussion might have been:

That, in my view, is where the residential and commercial energy storage market is heading.

Have you ever wondered... when you install a massive solar battery at home, it's packed with power. But if you were to wire your fridge or TV directly to that battery, not only would they refuse to turn on, they might actually burn out! 😱

🔋 The Battery's Native Language: Direct Current (DC)
Imagine water flowing smoothly and quietly in one direction through a pipe—that's Direct Current. The electricity generated by our solar panels and stored in our LiFePO4 batteries is all DC. It acts like neat, perfectly stacked energy packets, which makes it ideal for "storing in a warehouse."

🔌 Your Appliances' Native Language: Alternating Current (AC)
However, the wall outlets, air conditioners, and washing machines in your home don't understand DC. They are used to "Alternating Current." AC is like ocean waves; the direction of the current switches back and forth 50 or 60 times every single second. This "wavy" power is much better for traveling long distances across power lines and is what heavy-duty appliances need to run.

✨ The Magic Moment: Enter the "Inverter"!
Since your battery and your appliances speak completely different languages, we need a super-translator: the Inverter.
When the storage battery is ready to power your home, the inverter acts like a super-fast DJ. It flips the DC switches on and off tens of thousands of times a second, literally "shaking" that straight-line current into wavy AC power!

🌊 Take Note: Not All Waves Are Created Equal!
Basic, cheap inverters chop out blocky, jagged power waves (Square Waves). If your appliances "eat" this, they will get indigestion—they'll buzz loudly, run hot, and break down easily. Battery systems are more than voltage, capacity and price.

Here are 10 practical terms every ESS installer should know:

1️⃣ **Cell Delta (ΔV):** Difference between the highest and lowest cell voltage.
2️⃣ **Active Balancing:** Transfers energy between cells to improve consistency.
3️⃣ **CVL:** Maximum charging voltage allowed by the BMS.
4️⃣ **CCL:** Maximum charging current currently allowed.
5️⃣ **DCL:** Maximum discharge current currently allowed.
6️⃣ **SOC:** Estimated energy remaining in the battery.
7️⃣ **SOH:** Remaining battery capability compared with new.
