Planning a smart warehouse retrofit? Five questions to answer before choosing AS/RS, a shuttle system or a stacker crane.

Automation isn't about picking the flashiest machine. It's about fitting a system to a building, a product flow and a budget that already exists. Before you shortlist vendors, ask:

1️⃣ What's your ceiling height, column spacing and floor load? A stacker crane, a shuttle system and high-bay AS/RS each have very different space requirements — and retrofitting a building is rarely cheaper than designing for it.

2️⃣ Which SKUs and load types are you moving? Pallets, cases, totes or a mix? Shuttle systems and stacker cranes specialise differently, and one platform rarely serves every zone.

3️⃣ How fast must inventory turn, and where are your real bottlenecks? Throughput should drive the design, not the other way around.

4️⃣ What does your WMS/WCS have to talk to? A beautiful warehouse still stalls if data flows don't match your systems.

5️⃣ How will this grow in three years? Phased expansion on a retrofit keeps downtime low and protects your capital.

If any of these sound like open questions on your roadmap, we'd be glad to walk through them. Visit our website or contact our team to start the conversation.

What warehouse tasks are actually being handed over to automation robots—not people?

Many people assume that warehouse automation is about replacing workers.

A more accurate way to look at it is this:

Robots are taking over tasks that are repetitive, time-consuming, error-prone, and do not necessarily require human communication or judgment. Meanwhile, people remain essential for work that requires judgment, collaboration, and accountability.

Instead of spending hours moving, searching, and repeatedly checking items, people can focus on more complex and valuable work.

The warehouse of the future may not be about robots replacing people. It may be about:
• Robots executing consistently.
• People understanding change.

Which warehouse tasks do you think are best suited for robots?

Is your warehouse ready for the next level of growth?

An automated warehouse system is not just a collection of machines. It is an integrated operating system that connects storage, material handling, software, inventory control, and order fulfillment.

The right warehouse automation strategy can help address some of the most common operational challenges:
• Limited storage capacity
• Rising labor costs
• Inventory inaccuracies
• Increasing order volumes
• Repetitive manual handling
• Pressure to improve delivery performance

Before selecting a solution, you should evaluate SKU profiles, pallet dimensions, storage capacity, peak throughput, order patterns, building conditions, software integration, and future growth requirements.

What is the biggest challenge in your warehouse today: space, labor, accuracy, or throughput?

Warehouse efficiency is no longer measured only by storage capacity. It is measured by how intelligently every pallet moves.

A modern smart warehouse connects automation, real-time data, and intelligent warehouse control to create faster, more accurate, and more scalable operations.

At the core of many automated storage and retrieval systems, the stacker crane enables high-density storage, precise pallet handling and efficient vertical space utilization. When integrated with the right software and warehouse processes, it can help businesses improve throughput, reduce manual handling and respond more flexibly to changing demand.

At Inform, we believe the future of intralogistics is not simply about moving goods faster. It is about making every movement more visible, predictable, and intelligent.

Warehouse automation has no one-size-fits-all solution.

The key question is not, “Which technology should we buy?”
It is: “How should each SKU move through the warehouse?”

A high-performing operation may combine:

• High-density goods-to-person systems for space-efficient, repeatable picking
• Manual picking areas for slow-moving, oversized, fragile or highly variable SKUs
• Conveyors and automated packing for smooth transport, buffering and order consolidation
• WMS and WCS to coordinate inventory, equipment and order priorities in real time

The result is a hybrid workflow designed around SKU characteristics, order profiles, throughput targets and operational constraints—not around a single piece of equipment.

This approach applies across industrial goods, e-commerce, food and pharmaceutical warehouses worldwide.

At INFORM, we help companies design and orchestrate intelligent warehouse processes that balance automation, flexibility and scalability.

The best automation strategy is not maximum automation.
It is the right level of automation for every SKU.

Let’s discuss how a hybrid warehouse flow could work for your operation.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for warehouse automation.

The right approach starts with the SKU profile, not the technology.

A recent warehouse project in Australia illustrates this clearly. Instead of relying on a single automation concept, the operation combines:
✅ a high-density goods-to-person system
✅ a manual picking area
✅ automated conveying and packing processes
✅ WMS and WCS coordination across the entire flow

Why use a hybrid setup?

Because SKUs behave differently. Fast-moving items, bulky products, slow movers, fragile goods and special-handling inventory rarely belong in the same picking process.

The real value of automation comes from matching each SKU group with the most suitable storage, picking and material-flow strategy, while ensuring that all areas work together as one coordinated system.

This principle applies far beyond one market. It is relevant to industrial, e-commerce, food and pharmaceutical warehouses worldwide.

Planning a warehouse automation project? Start by asking which process best fits each SKU, not which technology looks most impressive.
