WHAT IS Voc IN SOLAR
it means : open circuit voltage (Voc)
Voc; this is the voltage a solar panel produces when nothing is connected to consume the power.
inverter's maximum allowable solar-panel open-circuit voltage (Voc) DC.
The maximum voltage produced by a solar panel when not connected on any load.
example;
a solar panel has Voc 120V.
-when an inverter is written maximum PV Voc DC = 170V
it means your solar panels must not produce more than 170V at Voc when connected to that inverter.
So if your inverter says:
Maximum PV Voltage (Voc): V DC
Think of 170V as the red line.
You must design your panel arrangement so that the combined Voc stays below 170V.
Example 1 - Two panels in series
Suppose one panel has:
Voc = 65V
Two panels in series:
65V + 65V = 130V
130V < 170V - within the limit.
But three panels:
65V Ă 3 = 180V
180V > 170V - too high.
That could damage the inverter's PV input.
There's another important issue
Don't just look at the panel's Voc written on the label and stop there.
Voc increases when the panel gets colder.
Therefore, when designing a series string, you should account for the lowest expected temperature at the installation site.
NOTE: in cold weather early morning/evening hours âïž, Voc increases automatically
For safety, you also shouldn't design right on the 170V limit.
170V does not mean your solar panel must produce exactly 170V. It means 170V is the maximum PV open-circuit voltage the inverter can tolerate.
And remember again that
Voc â Vmp
