NOMINATED AMONG THE BEST.

We are excited to share that INNSiDE by Meliá Elounda has been nominated for Callwey’s “Die schönsten Restaurants, Hotels & Bars 2027”.

The annual award celebrates outstanding interior design concepts in hospitality, recognising places where atmosphere, materials, details and spatial experience come together to create a genuine sense of welcome and well-being.

The competition is accompanied by the annual yearbook, presenting a curated selection of outstanding restaurant, hotel and bar design projects and highlighting current developments in hospitality design.

A philosophy that resonates strongly with our approach to INNSiDE by Meliá Elounda. Opened earlier this year on the island of Crete, INNSiDE by Meliá Elounda is a contemporary resort with 85 guestrooms and suites. Here, architecture and interior design work hand in hand with the Mediterranean landscape. Materials, light and colour create a continuous connection between indoors and outdoors, while the transformation of the existing structure gives the resort a clear contemporary identity.

We are delighted to see this approach recognised by Callwey and to have INNSiDE by Meliá Elounda among the nominees for 2027.

The Swiss Hospitality Investment Club (SHIC) is returning to Zurich on 3–4 September 2026, bringing together leading voices from hospitality, real estate, and investment.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN MUNICH.

INNSiDE by Meliá Elounda is a Winner at the ICONIC AWARDS 2026 in the category Architecture – Transformation.

The ICONIC AWARDS by German Design Council recognise pioneering architectural projects and sustainable solutions across architecture, interior and product design. Receiving this distinction among international competition makes the recognition particularly meaningful for us.

A big thank you to our team, especially Aliki Gerogiannaki and Stavros Theocharis, for their outstanding work, and to everyone involved for their dedication throughout the project.

On 6 October, our team will be in Munich to accept the award for Team Monoplan and celebrate together with the other winners.

And the timing could hardly be better: with EXPO REAL taking place in Munich at the same time, it will be a great opportunity to combine the award ceremony with conversations and encounters across the real estate and architecture industries.

We are looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces at the ICONIC AWARDS, meeting new people and exchanging ideas with fellow professionals from across the industry.

MODERN ALPINE CHIC WITH A STRONG SENSE OF PLACE
The Löwen Hotel Montafon is located in the picturesque mountain village of Schruns and was originally built in 1974. Over the years, Monoplan has had the privilege of shaping the hotel’s design and evolution. In 2013, the existing building underwent a complete renovation, laying the foundation for its continued success and future growth.

In 2023, this evolution entered a new chapter with the addition of a new extension, seamlessly connected to the main building.

The design reinterprets the traditional Alpine hotel for a contemporary context. To reduce the building’s visual scale and strengthen its relationship with the surroundings, the architecture is articulated into three distinct volumes. Together, they create a balanced composition that responds to the character of the village while establishing a stronger connection to the surrounding mountain landscape.

The façade is defined by vertical timber lamellas, giving the building a distinctive and dynamic expression. Depending on the viewpoint and changing light, the façade shifts between openness and shelter, creating a subtle interplay of transparency, rhythm, and depth.

Outdoor spaces are an integral part of the concept. Generous terraces for the restaurant and conference areas extend the interior into the landscape, inviting guests to experience the mountains while dining, meeting, or simply enjoying the view.

“Als Gestalter und Entwickler von Hotels fasziniert mich vorallem das Zusammenspiel von Wirtschaftlichkeit und Design. Wir haben meist drei Kunden, die wir glücklich machen müssen: den Investor, den Betreiber und den Gast. Das sind in der Regel drei sehr unterschiedliche Perspektiven auf das Produkt. Wenn am Ende alle wirtschaftlich, operativ und emotional glücklich sind, haben wir einen guten Job gemacht. Dies macht es immer wieder herausfordernd, aber auch sehr reizvoll.”

600 YEARS OF HISTORY AND A NEW CHAPTER IN HOSPITALITY.

In the heart of Zurich’s Old Town, one of the city’s most historic buildings has entered a new era: Villa Florhof has reopened as Zurich’s first Lalique boutique hotel.

Dating back more than 600 years, the listed building presented a particular challenge: transforming a historic townhouse into a contemporary hotel while preserving the character that has defined it for centuries.

Led by Josep Ribes and Alexandra Verburg, Monoplan was responsible for the architectural planning and implementation, coordinating the transformation from December 2023 through to the opening on 1 August 2026.

Behind the intimate scale of just 13 individually designed rooms and suites lies a highly complex architectural intervention. Historic elements were carefully restored, the building’s interior was reorganised and its technical infrastructure comprehensively upgraded to meet the requirements of modern hospitality.

Throughout the process, one principle remained central: designing from the guest’s perspective. Because the guest experience does not begin in the room. It starts with the first step into the hotel and continues through every space and every moment of the stay.

Together with Lalique’s distinctive design language and the interior concept by Green & Mingarelli Design, the result brings a new hospitality experience to a building that has been welcoming guests for more than a century.

MODERN STAYS IN THE HEART OF BASEL

In the middle of Basel’s historic Münzgasse, limehome Basel offers a new approach to temporary living. The project transformed 73 existing rooms into 67 modern apartments designed for comfort, flexibility, and everyday ease.

Many of the units were equipped with kitchenettes, making them suitable not only for short stays but also for longer visits. The redesign focused on clear layouts, updated bathrooms, and a calm material palette that creates a warm and contemporary atmosphere.

The goal was to combine the character of the historic surroundings with the needs of modern travelers and create spaces that feel practical, simple, and comfortable at the same time.

BUILDING FOR GENERATIONS, NOT FOR TRENDS

What if the future of hospitality is not defined by what we build next, but by how intelligently we work with what already exists?

In a recent guest article for Architekturblatt, Monoplan founder and senior partner Daniel Schneider explores how changing travel patterns, economic uncertainty and growing resource constraints are reshaping the hospitality industry.

The article discusses why revitalisation, adaptive reuse and long-term functionality are becoming increasingly important for investors, developers, operators and architects alike.

At its core is a simple idea: the future of hospitality may depend less on building more and more on building smarter.

This does not mean that new construction has become obsolete. Rather, it means that every project, whether a revitalisation or a new build, should be evaluated through a broader lens. Sustainability is not achieved by following trends or applying isolated measures. It requires a holistic understanding of how buildings function, adapt and create value over time.

RETHINKING A ZURICH LANDMARK

With the opening of Ruby Mimi Hotel Zurich in October 2021, the first Ruby Hotel in Switzerland became part of the vibrant city center of Zurich, located just steps away from the main train station.

Monoplan was commissioned to design the first two Ruby Hotels in Switzerland, including Ruby Mimi in Zurich and Ruby Claire in Geneva, which followed in Geneva in 2022.

For the Zurich project, the former “Du Pont” office building at Beatenplatz was transformed into a hotel while carefully preserving its architectural history. The building once housed well known local venues such as the “Movie” restaurant and the ABC cinema, both deeply connected to Zurich’s cultural life.

A large part of the project focused on restoring the historic structure, staircases, façades, and roof areas, many of which were protected under preservation regulations. The design approach combined the character of the existing building with the interior concept of the Ruby Hotels brand.

Monoplan was responsible for architecture, interior design, overall planning, and construction management throughout the project.
