Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz FHNW Campus Brugg-Windisch – we not only introduced new learning zones but also completely transformed the central reception – turning it into a clearly recognisable, vibrant, and inviting space – one that signals arrival, eases orientation, and enhances the spatial quality.

▶️By extending the floor finishes into the open area, the reception zone now reaches beyond the sliding doors.

▶️Behind the glazed partition, the reception area accommodates a reception desk on one side and IT support desks on the other. The layout now improves orientation, making it immediately clear to visitors where to go for general enquiries or IT support.

▶️By introducing new, custom-designed reception desks, integrating wall graphics, and applying FHNW’s corporate colours, the area now clearly reflects the university’s identity.

4️⃣ / 4️⃣ The fourth module – as part of the new learning areas on the FHNW campus Brugg-Windisch – is the focus zone 🌱 for concentrated learning without conversations or phone calls.

▸ Designed as a contrast to the lively coworking and lounge zones, the focus area provides a quiet retreat for concentrated study and distraction-free work, allowing students to recharge before returning to the dynamic pace of student life.

▸ This pilot project showcases how a minimal architectural intervention can achieve maximum impact within an existing building – by working with clear spatial zoning, expressive colours, varied textures, and bold graphics concept.

▸ And above all, this project has created real value for students and staff and has brought fresh energy to the campus as a place for learning, working, and exchange.

3️⃣ / 4️⃣ Part of the new learning zones on the campus – the forum area for teaching, knowledge sharing, discussion, and networking

▸ The forum is a versatile space that can be used for presentations and teaching, as well as for events with external stakeholders and internal university events.

▸ By adjusting the curtain, the space can be opened up or partitioned to provide more privacy and improved acoustics.

2️⃣ / 4️⃣ Lounge for informal exchange, short breaks, or spontaneous conversations

▸ An energising and vibrant area with inviting seating that brings people together – a place to unwind, connect, engage, and exchange.

1️⃣ / 4️⃣ Coworking areas for individual and group learning

▸ One of the key challenges of this project was to implement a sustainable and effective transformation within an existing building. Rather than a full renovation, the project was conceived as a gentle architectural intervention. Existing floor finishes and ceilings were preserved, and structural modifications were deliberately avoided.

▸ This called for a highly expressive design approach. Each module was therefore given a strong and distinctive identity – bringing joy and energy to the spaces while remaining in dialogue with the existing architecture.

▸ Both coworking areas offer a variety of learning settings – from learning in larger or smaller groups to independent and more concentrated work to teaching – all with a strong focus on coaching, exchange, and support.
