More than two years after Hurricane Helene, the Buckeye Lake Dam — Beech Mountain’s only water supply — still has a damaged spillway and an emergency drain that doesn’t work.
Town Manager Bob Pudney warns that if the dam fails, there’s “a great possibility of loss of life and property downstream." Fixing it means draining the lake and building another reservoir that requires millions the town does not have.
“Every day that I don’t get this moving is another day we’re at risk," Pudney said.
